I can't imagine it wouldn't be safe since white cribs from the store are usually painted. I can't remember what it's called, but there is paint out there now that's supposed to be fume free or something that a lot of people use in their baby's room. You'll want to give the furniture a good sanding and priming before painting to make sure the paint sticks and doesn't peal off.
