I'm waiting to see if it's covered by my insurance, but does anyone currently use Mirena? I'm just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this type of birth control.

I mentionned this to my midwife today and she said that if we wanted to get pg again within 2 years, then Mirena wasnīt the best method. So i donīt know any more about it.

ME!! I used it for 3.5 years before TTC. I absolutely LOVED it. I had no periods, I lost weight, my sex drive increased (compared to BC pills) and overall I felt really hormonally stable. The removal was a breeze and I got pg 4 cycles later. I know everyone has a different opinion and experience, but I happened to love it!

I think I had to pay around $300 for it. Considering BC pills for me were about 25/month, in 12 months I'd gotten my money's worth. Good luck deciding!!

I had one for a year and a half. I had a LOT of spotting with it. Many months I had no period, but all the spotting was so annoying! Putting it in and taking it out weren't bad... just some cramping with it.

Thanks guys. Sam - I wonder why your doctor said if you wanted to get pregnant within 2 years it's not the best option. I thought that was kind of the point that you could take it out and be ready to get pregnant at any time. At least that's what they advertise?! Erin - thanks for the great review!! Lauren - I had another friend on it that had a ton of spotting so I am a bit worried about that.

Anyway, I'm still waiting to hear from my doc to see if it's covered by my insurance so we'll see.

Gwen- I also had some spotting for about the first year- it was very random and usually brown and extremely light (no more annoying than discharge for me).

I had the non-hormonal IUD... I'll tell you, if it is presented as an option, I'd recommend against it... I had mine for 4 weeks. I had incredibly painful cramps (like lay in bed and cry for 72 hours because no amount of ibuprofen will help type pain), the heaviest AF of my life, and they LOST it. I had to go in for an ultrasound to see if I still even had it! Insertion was semi painful because my OB accidentally cut my cervix when he grabbed it with the clamp, I had spotting the whole time (and I mean heavy spotting, almost tampon worthy).

The only easy thing about the whole process was the decision to have it removed, and the removal itself.

Cost me $75 here in Canada... But I'd recommend against the copper ones. No experience with the hormonal ones b/c I'm allergic to hormonal birth control so...

Good luck though!

Thanks for the advice ladies. One more question....if I do still have AF, can you still use tampons?

Yikes That sounds painful! It almost sounds like there was issues to begin with with your dr. cutting your cervix But I'm not familiar with the copper IUD but I know most women still have heavy periods with those. I"m glad you got it out!

Gwen- to answer your question, yes! You can use tampons. I honestly never needed to and hadn't bought a box in 3.5 years until we started TTC!! If I was spotting, usually a pany liner would suffice.
