Today was Haylea's one week check up...can you believe it? Where did theweek go??? Anyway she did great. Weight is at 6 lb 2.5 oz (6 10 at birth). I am sure she got down to 5 something so we think it is on its way up since she has BF great the last two days. We go back Thurs just for a weight check to be sure it is going back up but other than that she is perfect!!!

Thanks to all of you for all the well wishes and congratulations. It is hard to find time to get on here much but I have read all the replies and I appreciate each one!

Oh and because I am too tired to go look and reply I wanted to ask a question about Toni's "empty your breast" post...

How do you know when it is empty?? Since reading that article I started letting her finish just on one side and then pump the other if I am engorged. Before that I was limiting her to 10-15 min on each side and then switching so that they would be even. Thank you Toni for that post...just in time. But anyway since then she can nurse until she is done on just one side and it still seems like there is milk coming out. Would she keep sucking if nothing were coming out or would she stop?

Good question. Elliott would suck and suck and suck long after milk was coming out in order to soothe himself and because sucking releases serotonin (the feel-good hormone). The LC helped me see the difference in his sucking when he was just comfort nursing. IT would get faster and no audible swallow--like a pacifier suck. Ack. I wish it were easier to explain. I don't know that any reading would have helped me, I had to experience it. . . definitely see an LC if you are questioning anything

Glad Haylea is growing well!

Sounds like she is doing well.
I was always told to empty one breast completely, she never really wanted more than one side until 6 weeks, then only at night.

I found that if she had completely emptied one side and was still hungry she would latch on as normal, suck really quickly 4 or 5 times, then pull away and scream, she would do this 2 or 3 times and then if I changed sides sheŽd start feeding properly again. If she didnt want to change sides sheŽd just let go, press her tongue against the nipple to just suck without drinking or even fall asleep. I never had to pump the other side because at first she was feeding every 45 minutes!!. Then my supply evened out a bit.

I hope you sort it out quickly, but it sounds like you have lots of support. (the BF board is great for advice too, at 6 weeks they saved my sanity!!).
