Just got an email from my school administration...apparently four kids have cases of swine flu...of those four, two have been to school this year, two have not...I always get the germs that the kids have, and I'm pretty scared of this one...specially because of baby
Now, this part gets tricky...
I called my OB, and she called back right away, and said that they were calling in Tamiflu for me, and that I should take it immediately, to boost my immunity so that IF I get the swine flu itwould help it be less severe - BUT, I was reading up on it, and I'm not really into taking something if I dont have the sickness - its a category "C" drug which means that there isn't enough information to know for sure if it is safe (though lab testing hasn't showed anything really bad happening)...
So, I was thinking of getting the Tamiflu - but, not taking UNLESS I get sick (I've heard that Tamiflu works well if taken right when you get sick)...cause, I might not even catch it (I'm going crazy on washing my hands and keeping the kids at a bit of a distance)...and, I just dont want to take any unnecessary risk by taking it when I dont need it, but I also dont want to risk getting horribly sick and my baby's health...
What do you think?

I am worried about swine flu, esp because i work with little kids! I'll def be getting the vaccine. I hope you're okay. I dont' think your OB would give you anything questionable but do what you feel comfortable with!

If I were in that particular situation, I would trust my doctor over my own skepticism or misgivings, because I'd hate myself if I didn't listen and then got really sick and had to really worry about the baby, kwim?
So if your doctor thinks you should take it, I'd say you should take it.

So sorry you have to worry abou this. I would maybe call the doctor back and discuss your concerns about the Tamiflu. Ask the doc if it is okay to hold off on the meds. Have these kids been in your class? Anyway, I really hope everything works out and there are no more cases of it.

I can understand your concerns about taking it. I agree with the above suggestion to call your doctor back to discuss your concerns. I hope you don't get swine flu!

Casey-
I think I will call her back, thats a really good idea, and she's always been really open to me doing that...
No, the kids aren't in my classes, but we have over 2000 kids at the school, so they all contact each other a lot...

That really is a tough one, on one hand I wouldnt want to take the meds unless it was completly nessesary because it is a class C med, but on the other hand you dont want to get the swint flu either. Are these kids that have been diagnosed with it still in school? Because they shouldnt be if they are. They shouldnt be aloud in school until they are completly healed of it.

Erica-
No, none of them are there right now, and they are not allowed back until they get the clear from the docs...

I have a sinus infection....got it the day before my IUI...and the pharmacist told me that category "C" also means that it hasn't shown any effects on humans, but that it has been shown to cause defects in animals. That was the class of drug I would have taken.
Oh (edit) the pharmacist told me that if his wife were pregnant he would not let her take any category C meds unless absolutely necessary. And then he gave me a recommendation. You might be able to go to a pharmacy (or call) and see what the pharmacist would recommend.
I have opted not to take any meds (just cough drops as recommended by the pharmacist). I'm not sure what I'd do....I'd probably get it, but not take it unless you feel like you are getting sick. Take some vitamin C and garlic and try and boost it naturally for now.
That is just what I'd do.

I have to agree that I wouldnt take the meds unless you are starting to feel sick, you dont want to take something that isnt completly nessecary. In the end you need to make the final decision on what you want to do, but thats my take on it. I agree to eating things like fruit, especially oranges to boost your immune system to fight off any illness.
