I may do it. I am also hoping to expose baby to French early on so he/she has a better shot at picking up multiple languages.

We are already signing to the girls, but my SIL is deaf and both DH and I sign. It's not hard for us to teach them. My sister taught both of her kids and it's so nice when they can tell you things instead of screaming before they can talk. Most of the signs used with kids (i.e. milk, more, finished/all done, mom, dad, bye etc.) are really easy to learn. There are multiple bavy signing books you could use to learn signs or just look them up online. My sister made up a few signs for things she didn't know actual signs for like Cheerio.

We do it. Right now, I'm trying to focus on just a couple of them. Eat, all done, and water. Water is really difficulty, so I figure that E will modify it on his own. He hasn't produced any yet, but I just keep modeing, as he is fairly resistant to hand-over-hand. After he starts getting those down, I'll add in some more.

Actually, Baby Signing Time, is the only video Kerrigan will watch! I borrowed it from my sister so that we could all slowly learn as she is adopting a 6 yr old little boy from China who is deaf. They are really great videos if you're interested in signing but don't know how yet.

My neighbour did it with her son when he was a baby. I saw it in action and think it's FANTASTIC! I think I would LOVE to teach that to our LO.

We want to. I do some here and there, but I'm not consistent. I need to get a book, my signing isn't very good anymore. I have a few friends IRL who do it and have always thought it's a great idea.

My Mum fostered many children with learning/hearing difficulties and I learnt a few signs in makaton (sp?). I sign a bit to Ana, she can do milk, but only when she sees me fiddling with my bra strap to feed her, she is doing it sometimes when shes tired and wants to nurse. She also does it when one side is empty and she wants to change!
(I dont know if its the smae, but milk in makaton is opening your hand and making a fist over and over again).
I think I will have to try more signs as Ana is going to be bilingual and those children always take longer in learning to speak.

So, is baby signing very different from, say, ASL? I took a few ASL classes several years ago and still remember the basics, but I'm guessing a lot of those signs are too complicated for kiddos, and may require modification...

A lot of baby signs are the same as ASL signs. Any sign can be adapted to be easier for kids. Just think about deaf children signing. It's like hearing children learning to speak vocally. Things are perfectly crisp and clear at first. They will make a sign close to the real thing and the parent will understand it. Most of the signs I mentioned earlier, milk, all done/finished, mom, dad etc. are the same. You as the parent can learn baby signs or ASL signs, it's up to you. We'll be using mostly ASL signs just because that's what we know. There are a few family signs that DH and his sister use that aren't real signs, but they've used since they were children. I'm sure those will get passed onto the girls just in conversation.

We use ASL. I'd like it to be relevant later in life if they remember them
