So I went to my doc yesterday for my first appointment. My doc is a general doc and is referring me to an OB but he still did up a rec for an u/s.

He said - anywhere around Nov 20th - which will put you at about 18 weeks! I was like - 18 weeks! Are ya kidding?!?

I will see how long it takes to get into the OB. I have to see someone (either OB or GP) in a month - and I'll ask them for an earlier u/s!

18 weeks? No way!!

That's actually pretty normal.... A lot of Docs only do the Level 2 U/S.

It does suck though.

Ditto...if you don't have a history of loss or other risk factors most Drs wont do an u/s before then.

When i went into my first appt (the first time) they told me they would do one at 12 weeks and then the gender one between 16-20 and thats it...

But i think they're flexible and if you really really want something they probably wont deny you. I'm only 8 weeks and i've had three already because of my previous m/c and bleeding issues.

I don't plan to get an u/s until around that time, but i understand you wanting to get one sooner. Every doctor does things differently.

Aww that stinks you have to wait so long to see your LO. I know a lot of doctors won't do earlier U/Ss unless you've had a problem.

I'm hoping we're able to hear a heartbeat at our first appointment through something other than an ultrasound. Hopefully the doctor will be able to use a doppler or something but i'm not sure how it's going to work yet.

We could hear Elliott's heartbeat at around 10 weeks, which really helps. I must say that I was lucky because my OB does u/s at 6-8 weeks to get the most accurate dating possible. I know it's hard to wait--I totally feel for you!

Sorry you have to wait so long. That really stinks! Hope your OB will let you get one sooner.

It's pretty standard in Canada. It's unlikely you'll get one covered prior to that without problems, but you should be able to hear the h/b via Doppler around 10-12 weeks. Many dr's in the US won't do 1 before the level 2 either.

I'm sorry, that stinks! I had one at almost 12 weeks because the doctors where I go do them standard in the first trimester to date the pregnancy (1st trimester u/s are more accurate to date a pregnancy than later ones).

Good luck!

That is a long time to wait! I've already had one during my 5 weeks, but my dr wanted to make sure baby was in the right spot (not ectopic) With my endo issues I have a higher risk for ectopic. Now my next one is monday, which if I didn't have prior issues would have been my first actual US at my first real appt. I've already seen the dr twice, but Monday is my first "real" OB appt.

Thats a longtime to wait!
Here you get one at 12 weeks, the anatomy scan at 20 and a growth scan at 32 weeks.
Then a positioning scan at 39 weeks.

20 weeks is the best scan, you see loads but its not too crowded to see whats what.
