(nak) not so sure abot that...i think it is a little weird. if i died i wouldnt want other women bfing haylea. i dont mind donor bm that dh would give her but for other women to actually nurse her? no.

what about screening for disease? at least a donor bank would do that but you dont know anything about these women...

April - I think I totally agree. A little too weird for me. Really nice of all of them, but like you said I'd rather them donate the BM for him to feed in a bottle! Just too weird for me.

It is definitely something we aren't familiar with culturally here (at least, not at this point in our history - remember, we did at one point PAY wet nurses), but I don't see anything wrong with wanting to provide a baby with both nutrition AND a feeling of comfort. I just hope the Dad can pull himself together and make sure that his child doesn't end up bonding more with strangers than his grieving father.

i don't think it's weird at all. most donor bm is extremely expensive, costing thousands of dollars for the first year. that's because the bm is pumped into specific containers, pasteurized and stored before sold. that add's up in expense. i think this man and baby are extremely lucky to have this support from his community.

I completely agree Valerie! I can't imagine what it must be like for him loosing his wife after childbirth. Sad but amazing story!!

I tend to agree with April... I wouldn't want so many women BFing my baby. I think I would be ok with one woman doing it, provided we knew her. I was wondering about the whole disease thing too. On the flip side.... I would totally do this if someone needed me to.

I don't personally like the idea at all. Why didn't he just use formula instead in this case? No matter how strong an advocate of bf you are. I don't mind the pumped breast milk as much. And IMO a bottle fed child still gets all the needed love and attention than one that is bf. I don't want another woman breast feeding my child, not even someone I know.
