Just a rambling vent!! bear with me!

As I have mentionned before we are having problems with Ana´s weight gain, she is still 13lb10 at 6 months (which is about the average 3.5 month old).
Well, my neighbour (who is lovely) has a daughter (not so lovely) with a baby girl 2 weeks older than Ana. She knows how worried I was about it and couldnt think of anything better to say than "Yoúr baby is so small, is she OK?, whats wrong with her" etc I felt awful because we still dont know if there IS something wrong.
Then she says "My baby is almost 7 months and 20lbs, maybe Ana will catch up one day, like when she´s 5!!" Then asks if Ana can roll over, as her baby has just learnt, so I was mad and asked what was wrong with her, Ana can crawl, maybe Lucia will catch up, like when she´s 5!, now I feel awful and apologised to my neighbour, but really, some people need to think before engaging their mouths.

Thanks for the vent!

That's funny!! I would have been angry too and probably said a lot worse. I think you are totally justified at being angry. Hopefully your neighbor will understand. Some people just don't think!

Go SAM! This woman clearly needs a lesson in etiquette. I hope your neighbor will understand.

Wow, what a *****!

I do have a question for you. Why are they so worried about her weight? At 6 months, Christian only weighed 14lbs (a few ounces short of what Ana weighs now) and no one was worried. He's a year old and still under 20 lbs. Some babies are on the bigger side and others are on the small side. As long as they keep up with their own growth pattern, usually there's nothing to worry about. How much did she weigh when she was born?

Good for you, Sam! I probably wouldn't have been that nice, and I wouldn't have apologized, either. Like I've said before, Ana is petite and perfect. I do hope you get some good answers soon, though.

Karly, she was 6lb 3 at birth, but she had intrauterine growth retardation (for some reason she lost over a pound in the last month of pg).

They are worried as she is 28"long, so thats the 87th centile and her weight was under the 9th, which made her height/weight ratio (which should be between 40-60) 3.

So she´s the length of an average 8 month old with the weight of a 3.5 month old. But her head is in line with her height so shes just skinny I guess.

My neighbour said that sometimes she cringes with what the daughter comes out with!

I honestly don't blame you one bit for what you said! I probably would have said much worse! Hope you don't run into her for awhile.

This is interesting.. when Nathan was born, the doctors told me he had lost weight in the womb, too, but I hadn't heard that term used for it before. They didn't say how much he lost, just they knew it was "a bit" because of the excess skin around his ribs.

I hope they find some answers for her weight.. although maybe the only answer is she'll be a petite girl.

Sounds like she's going to be tall & skinny!! Christian is the same way and has always been in the mid-higher percentile for height and 10ish % for weight. I hate the whole percentile thing. Every baby grows differently and to put everyone on the same chart, it makes it seem as though there is something wrong with the smaller babies. As long as they stay on or close to their own growth pattern, there should not be any questions asked or issues. Based on the numbers you wrote (minus the fact that they're telling you she lost a pound inutero- I hate u/s, how can you really know how much weight was lost or gained? kwim), Ana and Christian seem to be on close to the same growth pattern. Christian was 6lbs 10oz when he was born and, like I said, 14lbs at 6 months.

I'm not saying there may not be something playing into why she's so small weight-wise, but I did want to let you know that it could very well be normal. In my own case, I was sent for test after test after test when I was little because I had a very hard time gaining weight. I believe I weighed 24lbs when I was 3 or 4. There was absolutely nothing wrong with me. It didn't stop them from testing me and questioning whether my Mom actually fed me or not.

Add us to the same little bitty club! Elliott's numbers are right on with Ana and Christian. He weighed right around 14 1/2 pounds at 6 months and was 17 pounds at 8 months. The only difference is that he was 7 pounds, 8 ounces at birth, BUT I had been flooded with fluids during labor, so that may have artificially increased his weight, kwim? Ah, the percentiles. I'm just thankful that our doctor realizes that not everyone is going to be average. I just wish I had found him before--our pedi for the first two months really stressed me out and wrecked my milk supply.

What a nasty thing for the neighbor's daughter to say. I would have probably said something really bad! Ana is adorable and it sounds like she will be tall and skinny I do hope you get some answers soon.

urgh how frustrating!! I get those comments all the time!!

her 7 month old is bigger than my 13 month old

Summer is small too! she has always been in the 5-8% for weight and 20% for height.

Summer is like Christian 6lb 13oz born and then at 6 months she was 14lb 12oz but at 13 months she is 18lb 3oz (but shes lost weight since then ) don't let other people get you down!

Yeah, I think that I have mentioned to you before about how tall and skinny Tori has always been. At 9 months, she was 16 lb, 12 oz. and 28 inches (I think). I think at 6 months, she was 14 pounds right on. She weighed 5 lb. 9 oz. at birth. She has also always been in the lower percentile for weight and mid to upper for height. I would not really worry too much, as Karly said, it just sounds like she is growing fine just on her own pattern.

ETA-I would have been pretty irritated with the woman also. As Tam said about her 13 month old, my 11 month old is not what her 7 month old is either.
