A girl in my DDC did this with two of her placentas. Most recently, she had it encapsulated into pill form but in her previous pregnancy, she actually put it in the blender and cooked it and ate it.
Personally, I couldn't do it, but she strongly believed in it.

I know a few people who have done it - they swear that it really helps.
I personally think it's really interesting but I don't know if I'd have the stomach to do it at home myself... I did talk to Jeff about it though - he says he'd support me if I wanted to...

I did it!!!! I mean I took them but didn't make it, my midwife did My midwives recommended it as well as my lactation consultant. I wasn't going to at first, but I'm so glad we decided to do it!
I swear it totally helped! I 110% recommend it!! It helped my PP bleeding: it wasn't for bad, heavy or long. I did not get any PP depression. I healed and recovered quickly and great! It helped my milk supply. It helped balance/restore my hormones. And helped my uterus get back to size. Helped with fatigue and energy as well. I felt amazing, energized and healthy soon after I started taking them, which was 2 days after he was born (midwife had to prepare/make it), before I was pretty tired, unable to sleep, extremely sore and weak. I had a hard time getting in/out of bed and walking to the bathroom. It also helped with constipation. I know that if I hadn't have taken them my recovery would have been longer, harder and I would have had the baby blues, because how it was those 2 days until I got the capsles! I will be doing/taking them for all out next babies!

Thanks for sharing your experience, Lindsey. I understand it's a personal choice, but I think it's too bad that some won't even look into it before making that choice. Yes, it turns your stomach a bit at first, but I have been researching this since I found out about it and am amazed more women don't even know about the option! Glad to hear it helped you so much, I think I am going to go for it when the time comes.

You're welcome! I completely agree! That is awesome Mandy!! Go you!!! You won't regret it.
Just wanted to add....all mammals consume their placentas (they eat it raw), why do you think they do it?? Hydrating it and putting it into capsules is different, not as gross. There's no why I could have done it if it wasn't hydrated and capsulated

Angela (SoIMarriedaNerd) did this in my DDC. I will see if she wants to stop by and share her story.

Popping in! If you want to see how I did it myself I did a blog post on it (warning it does have placenta pictures) Trying to Bring a Dream to Life: DIY -Placenta Encapsulation steps for at home
I was great after I started taking them! Bleeding down, uterus back to normal, milk supply was/is great, energy, hormones back to normal. I even can say I think sex was/is better thanks to the fact it got my hormones back to normal so vaginal drying wasn't an issue. At my 2 weeks pp appointment my m/w then became a believer also--my iron level was perfect, my bleeding was a light spotting, no vaginal pain, uterus was great....I got the ok to have sex 2 weeks later because of how well I was doing!
I know its kind of odd her in the states to do this. But I really recommend anyone to give it a try, its easy to do.

That was the point I was going to make. I'm not sure if I personally will be doing this, but certainly it makes sense from a physiological and evolutionary perspective.

I´ve never heard of this, but I had special afterbirth pills (thats what they were called and now I am wondering if they werent just for AFTER the BIRTH or if they were made from (or to mimic) afterbirth/placenta??) That were to prevent anaemia and help milk supply. I was fine after the birth, I had 2 weeks bleeding and 2 more weeks light spotting. No afterpains and my stitch was fine. At 9 days I was given the all clear for everything (1 more week for dtd).
However,I had partial placenta abruption, my placenta had detatched slightly and was black/brown on one edge and was dry, so I think it wouldnt have been good to try it.
I´m looking into this for next time though.
