Recently we were offered a house for free to live in for two years-housesitting. Its 45 mins from town, and we are saving 500.00 a month puttin it away ( we are actusually doing this!) to save up for our own home.

Downpart? its next door from my in laws.

That are CHAIN smokers.

My husband is a smoker but he doesn't smoke around me, he goes outside. He has never smoked inside the house, as I am a non-smoker and have bad asthma.

I hate going to my in-laws cause they don't care if I am there or not, they will smoke regardless and I hate it right now. Not so much before but now, where I am carrying my baby, I feel I have the right not to be around it, if I am inhaling it, the baby is inhaling it. Right??? So I try to stay away most times cause I don't wanna be around it and they would ***** and bark if I bring it up and cause unnecessary comments. They wont say much to us but they will complain to everyone else.

Tuesday, I brought in my niece to spend the night with me, we had to go down to the in laws to get something and had to Bring Claire along. NO ONE HAS EVER smoked around her.

They lit one up right in front of her. Thankfully, my husband spoke right up and said, you know no one smokes around her right????... and all she said i'll go to the living room.which isnt that far and a curious 3 year old is going to follow.. anyhow, brad said well you dont smoke around Michaela and Chloe ( which is her other granddaughters- 3 years and 1 year) and she spoke up, Oh yes I do.......: eek:

As far as I know, THERE PARENTS have asked them to go outside when they are there they dont believe in smoking around the kids,....basically they don't do it when THEY are there.. but as soon as they go out the door, they smoke all they want around them..

besides that, i heard them ***** and complain about babysitting them for a few hours when asked etc....

now with my baby.. I know they are the grandparents, but I feel its my right to not to have them babysitting my child, or being in that house without me.

They can see him/her whenever they want, but I don't want them to be there alone with them knowing that they will smoke around my child....

my husband now.. uggh.. wait til he gets home tonight.. I know its going to be a arguement/fight cause I have the car most times, but yesterday, he had the car, and when i went to the car that time, there is 2 cigarette burns in the backseat.............why was he in the backseat????....Two?!!... I asked him before, NOT TO smoke in the car.. ugh and this time he obviously did, now i didnt smell the smoke or anything... but still..two burns in the backseat that looked like it was there for a while!!.. like it was a bad burn.. so much for selling the car after so many years!!.. URGH!!!!!!!!!!

Thats my vent for the day!!!!!

I'm sorry you're going through this, but I am sure you know how bad second hand smoke is to your child. Second hand smoke is even bad for others and their fertility. My parents smoke and just because it is bad for fertility, I do not g outside when they smoke (they don't smoke inside). But here are some articles in case you ever have to call them on the carpet, which I hope you don't. And I agree with you, you have the right to choose who babysits your child.

Some of the articles talk about the mother smoking, but later in the articles it talks about how many chemicals are in the smoke (up to 4,000 ) and some research suggests being around just secondhand smoke can lead to an increased risk of stillbirth or miscarriage. I know you don't smoke

There is no rule that says you have to take your baby to their house. Make it clear that you don't want it around you or your baby becasue of asthma. Chances are your baby may have asthma as well and it isn't just smoke in the air but also on their clothes when they hold her that can be a trigger for breathing problems. Just tell them where you stand and stick to it...who cares if they talk about you, they will be the ones that look stupid saying they want to smoke around a baby!

Ugh! That is so annoying. But good for you for standing your ground. Something like that is unacceptable.

That really stinks! I'm sorry it is causing problems with your relationship with them, but I'd say you should continue to be firm, and be totally honest with them that they will NOT get to spend time with their grandbaby if they smoke in the same room with baby. Who cares if they B and moan - it is NOT safe for baby, or for mommy either, to be around second hand smoke! They may not want to accept what it is doing to their own health, but that doesn't mean they should be compromising the health of others. As for DH, the burns in the carseat thing would really P me off too. Has he thought seriously about trying to quit before becoming a daddy? Like some others have said, some chemicals stick to your clothes, so he could potentially be harming his own child even if he never ever lights up in the same room. Just food for thought.

There is no way I would leave my kids with those ILs! I cannot believe how inconsiderate they are!!! Even when I was a smoker, I never smoked around kids, I always moved away and made sure it wasnt blowing in their direction. Dont feel guilty one bit for feeling that way. Your baby is way more important and their health!!! Oh that ticks me off!!!
