I got a call back from the Dr and I have another UTI. Everytime I get pregnant this happens and every time they put me on macrobid. I'm wondering if I should avoid taking it this time and try natural things like cranberry juice to get rid of it. Any thoughts?

Someone on here (I dont remember if it was in my DDC or here) that they took Macrobid, and there was just a report on it recently...

Found it:

Common antibiotics tied to birth defects - Pregnancy- msnbc.com

I dont know anything more about it then what I read in the article, but thought it might be helpful

If you do decide to do the cranberry only, just make sure it is real juice. All the sugar in most juices are not good for UTIs. Lots of water is a wonderful way to flush out the kidneys. I've had a lot of UTI/kidney infections and this is what my doc told me. HTH and it goes away soon.

When I early in pregnancy I got a very, very bad sinus infection and my dr. prescribed me a Z-pac. I researched it an it was safe for pregnancy even though it was powerful. She told me that being sick is more of a risk sometimes than the products to clear it up. I have seen in the stores those AZO pills, made from pure Cranberry. As long as you get 100% Cranberry juice, not drink, the sugar should be fine because a lot of juices have higher sugar but if you get 100% juices it tells you on the label the sugar is naturally occurring from the fruit themselves, it isn't added. Hope you feel better

UTI's are miserable. Yuck. I had some good results with the cranberry supplement and also with acupuncture when I was getting recurrent yeast and UTI's. I hope you feel better soon.

I'd go with the natural methods too to see if they helped before taking any meds. The pure cranberry juice, cranberry pills, and lots of water sounds like a good plan to me. good luck! I hope it goes away really soon.

I'm so sorry Amanda! Those are no fun at all! UTI's can progress into kindney issues if left untreated. I had one that I thought I could fight off with Cranberry juice but it only got worse and led to a kidney infection that hurt so bad. I think you should definatley take antibiotics for it but I would talk to them about maybe using something differant this time and maybe getting a second opinion on what to take. If you went to your OB for the RX I would contact your Primary or vice versa just to see what the other thinks. KUP I hope it goes away quick.

Amanda, now the nurse in you knows that you can't get rid of an infection with cranberry juice/pills/etc. You are gonna need an ABX, girly! I am sure all will be fine, things are totally different this time.

I could totally hear Ash saying that before I even saw her post! I also had a UTI progress to a kidney infection, you don't want that.

When I had Lyme disease they put me on amoxicillan. My PCP prescribed it and I called my OB to make sure he agreed. If you're worried about macrobid maybe see if there's something else that might help? I know for Lyme they tyically prescribe something else, but I couldn't take it because I was pregnant. So I ended up being on it 3x a day for 3 weeks, but if you're worried about that drug in particular, it's worth asking if there's anything else.

Thank you for all the advice. It was the OB that prescribed it. I have a friend who is an OB as well and I talked to him last night, he said that unfortunately I would need to take it. The risk of miscarriage because of Bacteremia is much worse than the effects of the medication. He's always striaght forward with me and he's been known to tell me if there's something that he doesn't agree with my OB about and then he shows the me research why, I really trust him. So I'm heading to the pharmacy now to pick it up. But when I get this cleared up I'm drinking cranberry juice every other day to keep the UTI's away.

Ash I started laughing when I read what you wrote. I know I should know better but you can't blame me for trying.

I know I hate cranberry juice, but what I do is mix it about half and half with ginger ale and make a cranberry spritzer and it is a lot better At least tolerable, and they also make cranberry flavor ginger ail that I like mixing together.
