Last night we took her in to the pedi b/c she was supposed to get her 2nd flu shot. She'd started a cold a couple of days ago & has been ridiculously congested & has a raspy cough so I wanted him to look at her anyway. I was going to refuse the shot since she was already sick.
Her temp was 99.8 so borderline fever even though the pedi poo pooed it. He was adamant about giving it to her anyway so I really had to stand my ground. He looked at the ear that's been the trouble spot & said it's no better than it was. She's about a week & a half post a three shot series of antibiotics that usually fix it when all else fails in most children. So he brought DH & I into his office to discuss options. Basically he said they've done all they can do & we need to see an ENT. Apparently the infection she got last month never really got better despite augmentin, omnicef, & these shots (rocepherin?). He said that when kids have this many ear infections (she's had 2 but she hasn't responded to the meds) by age 1, chances are great for needing tubes & it's more of a physical problem than not giving the right meds.
I know it'll help her but the thought of having her under general anesthesia & going through the procedure scares me. DH was nearly in tears. And the stupid pedi was shrugging & laughing it off & I wanted to punch him. We theoretically switched but dh took Allie by himself last week & they gave him this follow up appt with this guy & DH didn't say anything I'm sure the other pedi will have the same feelings but he just handles things more professionally. Allie kept getting startled by this guy's loud voice & she'd start bawling.
So onto the ENT we go. Besides that, the network was done at work yesterday & causing all sorts of problems & then on the way home from the pedi, DH got into a fender bender (with Allie sleeping in the back) & cracked up his bumper & a brand new Nissan Pathfinder's fender. Thankfully everyone is ok but it's like throwing more money away So not a good day

aww poor Allie I hope everything goes well.
As for the accident, obviously I'm glad everyone is fine! But you will need to replace the carseat, regardless if it was damaged or just a minor accident. Some insurances cover a new one though, so check that out!

I'm so sorry, Melissa. What a pooey day. I hope the ENT can give you some peace of mind with Allie's ears. And I'm sorry her former pedi was such a jerk. I'm glad you switched. You don't need to deal with that.

Sorry about Allie's ears. Poor thing, she must be miserable. Glad you got a referral to the ENT though. Maybe he has another solution intead of just jumping to tubes.
I wouldn't be going back to that ped either! He sounds very insensitive.

sorry you had such a rough day! I know it stinks, but hopefully getting the tubes will help her ears to feel better. I've known kids who had them and it did wonders.

Wow, not a good day for you!! I dont think any parent likes the idea of putting their child under, especially so young. I agree, that tubes do wonders for kids and I think its a very short procedure.

Aw, so sorry you all had a rough day. That stinks that Allie might need tubes, but I do know they help children greatly. I hope things go smoothly with the ENT and that they are more sensitive.

I know that when I was a child I had to have tubes twice. It isn't really that big of a deal at all. 20 years ago it was just an hour or so and there was like no recovery time, I was fine-didn't have any pain or anything. But I had lost almost 75% of my hearing and was almost at the point of irreversible damage. I have always had ear problems and the tubes helped a lot, although my ENT was a huge part of my childhood--I saw him once a month

Whew. I think that it may be that your mean pedi may be right about her ear canals not draining properly and more antibiotic exposure is the last thing you want. I think that tubes are done under a conscious sedation now--in and out in no time. Of course that's the rational professional in me talking, not the mommy! I think an ENT will have a much better approach to her case. Please KUP!

I work for an ENT and the procedure takes not time at all and they help alot. Alot of the doctors I work for don't like to rush to surgery the will evaluate what meds she has been on and if they didn't do any good then he may suggest surgery or may give her some drops to drive for a few days see how she does on that. She will have a hearing test too so don't be suprised by that its just for the procedure. I hope your appointment goes good

Awww, poor Allie! I'm sorry she is having so many problems with her little ears. I bet the tubes will do her wonders if she ends up getting them. I know they helped my little sister tremendously.
