I know some ladies on this board are using/have used the Mirena IUD for birth control...can you tell me a little about your experience with the insertion (how badly did it hurt) and complications (if any) you've had with it??

I have a doctor's appt on Monday to have it inserted and I'm a little nervous!

I had it inserted about 10 week pp...let me tell u the insertion was not fun. It didn't necessarily hurt but was not comfortable. After that I bled for like 2 months straight...sounds horrible I know but it wasn't a lot of bleeding just annoying bleeding...now I have zero problems with it. So far I love it and have had no problems whatsoever!

I didn't think the insertion was that bad. And I even had it put in before I had any children (they say that is worse for pain).

As far as complications... I had spotting on and off for over a year. That's the only reason I won't get it again. I didn't have a regular period, but the spotting was soooo annoying. I know not everyone gets it like that though.

Good luck!

I had it for 3.5 years before we started TTC and I am getting another one inserted next week! I absolutely loved mine and didn't have any complications. I loved not having a period. I also had some spotting here and there for the first year but it wasn't enough to bother me and was way better (to me) than having an actual painful period. Good luck

i had mine put in about 2 weeks ago. inserion wasnt too bad. just a bit uncomfortable.

i will say that for two days afterwards, off and on my cervix felt itchy//stingy. it was very irritating. but it only lasted for about two days. and now it feels just fine. i am still very slightly spotting from it. like only a spot here and there.

I was thinking about using this after my baby is born too. I'm assuming insertion is more difficult because I will having a c-section so my cervix will still be tightly closed. But, it still seems like a pretty good option to me.

I got alot of headaches while on the pill, anyone have problems with the pill but did better on the mirena?

Karen, maybe that's why my insertion hurt because I had a c section? Not sure. They also knicked my cervix or something in there and I was bleeding so they were "in there" for quite a while trying to get the bleeding to stop so that's probably why I had a more difficult time with the insertion.

I didn't have any problems with the pill so I'm no help there.

I had a copper IUD before we started TTC - same shape as mirena with no hormones. Insertion and removal was pretty easy - just a little bit of cramping and spotting.

I'd personally avoid the copper ones in the future, because they cause HORRIBLE heavy periods and cramps... And I wouldn't get the Mirena for myself because I get nasty side effects from hormonal birth control.

We're just going to keep using no protection once baby is born, start trying for our 2nd (because we'll probably need Clomid to get PG again anyway), and then if we're done, DH is getting snipped

But if you don't react badly to hormonal BCP, I'd say its the best! Honestly if I didn't have such bad side effects, I'd do it myself after having the copper. Insertion is nothing - its like an extended pap, probably hurts less in fact. GL!

Thanks for the feedback ladies...did anyone have a tilted uterus?? I've heard that can lead to some complications with the Mirena as well...

my sister has the mirena..she is trying to convince me to get it when I have this baby.. I havent fully decided about it yet, i had no issue with orthra evra( was on it for like 3 yrs), and I want to go back to that , but mirena is tempting it just the no period thing.....what if you do get preggo on it, and if you dont get a period, how do you know?! thats the only concern I have,..even tho i know its very effective!

One thing to think about is, you if you breastfeed you can't take the pill or it will dry up your milk. That's why I went with Mirena because it was still safe to take while BFing. Just food for thought.
