My friend who just had her baby went to the same DR I do. She said they weren't going to give her an US her first visit and that the DR didn't like to do them until week 10. She said for me to tell them I didn't know how far along I was so that they would go ahead and do an US. Is this normal for them not to want to do an US until that late? How would they know everything is OK?

My doctor typically starts U/S at 8 weeks, but because of my previous loss he did an U/S at 6 and 8 weeks.

I had mine at 6 weeks because of bleeding, but otherwise i wouldnt have gotten one until until 12 weeks (and thats if i opted for the NT scan).... without that i dont think i would have gotten one until the gender scan. My Dr doesnt like to do a ton unless there is an issue
Just remembered even without the bleeding i would have had one at 6.5 weeks anyway because of my previous loss

I had mine really early because of a previous loss and infertility. It is not uncommon for doctors to wait to do the first one or to even see you.

I was bleeding so they did it at 6 weeks. But, his usual policy is 10 weeks along. That gestation gives them better measurements for accurate dating and gives you a better idea of how the baby is doing.
They couldn't get good measurements at my 6 week one, so they went ahead and did a 10 week one too. But, if the measurements are good at 6 weeks I wouldn't have gotten another one until the gender scan.

I got mine at 10 weeks and was glad I waited because the baby was so developed by that time that you could definitely tell there was a baby in there. Also, during the first trimester, there really isn't much that can be done except listening to the heart beat (& measurements) and if you go too early they may not even be able to detect it, which may cause you panic.

I got mine early (6wks and 7 wks) but that's only because we did IVF. Normally it wouldn't have been until 10-12 weeks.

I had mine at 5W 6D because I was having ovary pain, and they wanted to make sure the baby was in my uterus. They typically don't do them till 10+ weeks.

I had mine at 11 weeks, just had my second one at 20 weeks. They would only do one earlier if there was any potential probs.

I had mine at what turned out to be 5w 6 days. My dr does them starting at 6 wks, but that is actually very uncommon. Many dr's won't even do a dating ultrasound unless you're really unclear of when you conceived. The 20wk ultrasound is the "important" one as far as they're concerned. Of course, they're all important to us!!!

I had mine at a little over 8 weeks! They did it so that they could date the pregnancy!

I had my first u/s at my first appt which was 9 weeks & 4 days. It is normal for them to wait. It seemed like a long wait but it was worth it

I don't know when my dr typically does them. I had my first around 5ish weeks (but 6 weeks according to LMP, however I don't ovulate regularly.) This one was done because of having endometriosis I had I high risk for ectopic pg, so my dr wanted to make sure baby was in the right place ASAP. My 2nd one was 2 weeks later (around my 8 week appt) since the baby didn't have a heartbeat yet. I wasn't worried because I knew I had ovulated late (had BW done on CD 21 showing that I hadn't ovulated yet) Then the NT at 12 weeks. I didn't have an US at my 16 week appt and its actually been my only appt without an ultrasound. I must say I got a bit spoiled seeing baby so much! Then of course we had our anatomy scan at 20 weeks (well, technically 19 W) It sounds like its typical just to do one in the first trimester unless you have medical conditions/ pregnancy problems. Hope the time flies by so you can see your little one soon! If it makes you feel any better, there's really nothing to see earlier than that. My first u/s was just a sac and the second one was just a sac and a small peanut. But the later ones look like a little baby!

My first was at 6 weeks but only due to spotting. I had the dating u/s at 8 weeks & then the Downs screening one at 12 weeks. 10 weeks seems to be smack dab in the middle of those 2.

I think my Dr's office only does the one anatomy scan at 20 weeks. They do offer you the choice to do the NT scan at 12 or so weeks. I had one at 6 and 8 weeks because of 2 previous miscarriages. But I know in my first pregnancy, I didn't see the Dr until 10 weeks and they didn't intend to do an ultrasound that appointment (they only did because I knew I was 10 weeks from ovulation and Dr said I only felt 7-8).
