Whats the deal with sleeping on your back? Is it really that dangerous? I've read that its not "recommended" for the third trimester but i just dont get how you're really supposed to regulate this... I typically fall asleep on my side but wake up on my back so i just dont get how i can possibly avoid it?

It's funny, I've never been a back sleeper, except when I was pregnant! My dr said it's not really a big deal. Try not to do it, but don't freak if you do it in your sleep. If it's hurting something, your body will tell you to move.

The main reason they don't want you to sleep on your back after about 20 weeks is because the weight of the uterus/baby can sit on the vena cava vein and reduce the oxygen supply. If you happen to wake up on your back it's not a big deal, just try and sleep on your sides.

I am a back sleeper and this was REALLY difficult for me during pregnancy. I found that in the third tri that sleeping on my back became very uncomfortable, so it was it's own deterrent. Let your body be your guide and you'll be fine.

I couldn't sleep on my back, but I had so much baby packed in me I would lay on my side with one pillow below my head, one huge king size pillow behind me and one somewhat flattened pillow between my knees. I was very comfortable like that and rarely woke up because of comfort reasons. My bladder was another story. I could lean back toward the pillow behind me, so I wasn't completely on my side. The angle was very comfy.

Some women get nauseous sleeping on their backs. If it doesn't bother you and that's the only way you can sleep, then it shouldn't be an issue.

I've had a hard time staying off my back my whole pregnancy. That's the position i sleep most comfortably in. It's not recommended however and that's why i try my best to stay on my side. I go to sleep on my side every night and often times wake up on my back. If this happens don't freak out, just flip back to your side. That's what i do

My doc told me that it wasn't a big deal if I put something under one of my hips. Like a towel or small pillow just to make your hips a little uneven. At first, it fees weird, but you get used to it. I'm always always always a back sleeper so this helped me tremendously!! Also, I broke down and bought the snuggle pillow and absolutely love it!! It's definitely worth the money!!!

I have never been a back sleeper till I was pregnant either...and for the first months, this was the most comfortable position. Now that I am getting further along, I know that I need to try sleeping on my sides, but I to often times wake up on my back. As the other girls have said, it's not a biggie...I was also told if you happen to wake up on your tummy it's not that big of a deal either, but as you get bigger, rolling onto your tummy would definitely be more difficult. Like Gwen, I got a Snuggly pillow...and am still getting used to it, but currently, it is helping with the head aches, most of the time...so that's good. I hope you aren't worried about waking up on your back now.
