Well I got a call from the doctor's office a couple days ago and they told me that I failed my one hour glucose test. Now I have to do the three hour one and they are sending me the instructions and diet plan that I have to follow in the mail. I'm pretty upset about this and am worried about how this is going to affect my labor and delivery plans. I really hope I pass the next test, but since I have PCOS (and insulin resistance comes with that) I'm not optimistic. For those of you that have failed this how did this change the rest of your pregnancy or your delivery. I appreciate any advice! I have since changed my diet, but I'm not sure if that alone will help me pass the 3 hour test.

Update: Well I talked to the NP to find out what my actual blood sugar was. It was 184 and that was with fasting! I'm so upset right now. My chances for passing the 3 hour test definately don't look good. The NP said it was possible for me to pass, but she didn't sound too optimistic about it. I feel like such a failure and am kind of freaking out about what this means for my delivery and all the health risks to my baby. Sorry about the pity party, but thanks for the support ladies.

lots of people fail their one hour and pass their 3 hr. so don't give up yet! I had gestational diabetes and had I not gone early b/c of low fluid, I would most likely been induced right around 40 weeks. Typically, dr.'s don't like for GD patients to go over 40 weeks because the insulin ages the placenta (ask your dr. what her/his policy is with that).

BUT, lots of people can control it by diet and exercise alone. I had trouble with my fasting numbers only, so I was able to take glyburide (pill form of insulin) at night before bed and that was it. I was able to control the rest of my numbers by just changing my diet and incorporating more exercise when I could. I had to check my sugars 4x a day.

Changing your diet now before your 3hr probably won't help you pass (trust me, I did the same thing and was PRAYING it would!!)

Do you know what your numbers were when you failed your 1hr? Best of luck sweetie! I will cross my fingers you pass your 3hr.

I failed my 1 hour, it was in the afternoon (and I failed only by a few points). I did not fast for this one. When I took my 3 hour I passed with flying colors, I did have to fast for this and it was in the morning. When did you take yours? It may have something to do with it!

If you do have GD everyone I know was able to control it through diet. KUP

i failed both 1 and 3 hour glucose tests. I was able to completely control my blood sugars with diet and it did not change my delivery or anything else. As long as you keep it under control, your babies size shouldn't change. You should be able to deliver like any one else. Good luck. I hope you pass your 3 hour.

Thanks girls! I don't know what my blood sugar number actually was because they left me the message that I failed on my answering machine. I did fast before and took the test at 8:30am. I have to call Monday to set up a time for it. Thanks for everyone's input. I really appreciate it.

I failed the one hour and three hour (by a freaking point!).. I just have to check my blood sugar 4x a day (once right when I wake up and then 2 hours after every meal).. I've had no problem controlling my sugars w/ diet alone.

My Doctors will not let me go over my due date because of the GD because of problems that can arise... BUT they told me they would have been willing to work with me if it was managed by just diet.. I have more problems than just GD though (chronic hypertension superimposed with pre eclampsia) - so I'll be induced any time now.

Sorry you failed the one hour. The good news is I know many people who failed the one hour and passed the three hour. Hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones and will pass no problem.

Oh hun, I"m so sorry. I know there are other ladies on here that had GD so hopefully they can help you. Or visit the GD thread and I'm sure those ladies can ease some of your fears. Wish I had more advice for ya. Hang in there.

The GD board is not very active. I went there looking for help and info when I was first diagnosed with GD. There was often days between getting a response. Feel free to ask any questions here that you want. The few of us who have had GD can help answer things. It takes time, but you can figure out what your body can handle as far as carbs go. If you do fail the 3 hour, you'll probably meet with a dietitian as well as a diabetic counselor.

my numbers were 178 so i understand. the 3 hr will depend on how your body breaks down the sugars. be sure to ask what they are too. GD is honestly not as bad as it sounds. you can still have a drug-free birth even if that means you have to be induced. I would talk to your NP about that so she can give you ways to be prepared. you will feel better once you change your diet too. I was really upset too so please dont hesitate to ask me for questions or pointers. HUGS!!!

I'm sorry Casey! Just remember you are NOT a failure, and have done nothing wrong. It's just one of those risks that comes along with pregnancy. I know you will handle it as it comes your way, and your LO will be born healthy & happy! Try not to be hard on yourself, and keep us posted after the 3 hour. Crossing my fingers you pass!!
