But, where did you get your IV's? Or does it just depend on your veins? I would imagine the top of the wrist would be most ideal?

They started in my arms, but then my veins had had enough (I was in labor for 36 hours) so they started putting them in the top of my hand.

I know I'm not a BTDT mom but as a nurse we usually try to look for the best vein. We do typically ask whether you want it on the right or left side though. HTH!

Good luck Andrea! I hoping that sweet boy makes his appearance soon!

I am not a BTDT mom, but I have started hundreds of IVs over the years. We always look for the best, biggest vein, but if they aren't having problems finding one, I would suggest your non-dominant side and in the underside of your forearm. Those tend to be the least in the way as far as eating, using the restroom, etc. HTH.

My experience:
Top of the hand is best. It doesn't hurt (for me anyways) & you can still move your hand.
BE CAREFUL with the wrist. I got 2 started on my right wrist without a problem (on the inside edge of the wrist just under the bone). Although, I now have a scar at one spot. BUT they tried to start one on the left wrist in the same spot, and it hit a nerve. I still have nerve damage from that in my left hand and wrist, but it is getting better (took 3 months to see a difference and be able to touch it without getting shooting pains and tingling across that hand and wrist). Hurt like a mother! If it ever hurts, tell them right away to try somewhere else. I did but it was too late. Ugh.

I have no idea where I had mine for the delivery. I had one earlier that day too when they tried to stop my contractions and I don't remember.
I had one in my hand for surgery. I don't know if it was the person who did it, but the one in my hand hurt! The two for my delivery didn't hurt at all.

I've never had an IV and am terrified of getting one (probably just because i've never had one). Ugh, totally not looking forward to it. Even reading the responses made me feel a little sick. I know, i'm a baby!
