I have a Nikon D40. I chose Nikon (versus Canon) because it felt better in my hands. Then I chose the D40 because it was pretty cheap - it came with an 18-50mm zoom lens, a case, & a memory card and was $420.
I went this route because I knew I wanted a really fast lens that would take good pictures in my house that doesn't have good light at all. So I also bought a 35mm f1.8 lens. This lens is awesome and was used to take all of those pics. It takes great pictures in low light, and the 35mm focal length is great for taking pictures of Jack b/c I am usually pretty close to him.
The 50mm focal length is ok too - but I have to stand further back then I normally naturally would to take pictures of anything more then just his head, so the 35mm focal length is better suited for us. That lens was $200 brand new. So for less then the newer Nikon D90 that has features I am unlikely to use, I got a camera body, a good 18-50mm lens (works really well with adequate light or outside), and a sweet 35mm lens that works really well for where I take pictures and what I take pictures of. Eventually, I think I may upgrade the body, and so this camera will be/is great for vacations and such because it is light and relatively inexpensive.
The one main thing people don't like the D40 for is that the camera body doesn't auto focus. So if you want auto focus, you always must have lenses that contain their own autofocus motors in them. Both of the lenses I have have that motor, so I am fine. If they didn't, I would have to manually focus to take pictures. This is not that bad except it makes it difficult to take good pictures of a moving child.
Seriously though, looking at lenses I would buy, I think the only one I will miss out on are the older and cheaper 50mm lenses that don't have an autofocus motor. There is a 50mm Nikkor lens that does have built in AF (auto focus), but it is a lot more expensive. Still, I may want to start taking adult photos and would find the 50mm useful then, so I will most likely eventually get it, and make the excuse for paying the extra price that it will also come in handy when I eventually upgrade to a much more expensive camera body since it is a newer/better lens then its predecessors
Ok, novel over! I hope that was helpful
