Hi ladies,

I'm trying to break Brevan out of his swaddle. He sleeps really well right now so I'm afraid to change anything but he's starting to fight it. When I undo it he doesn't like that either lol. He's so funny! He's still not in control of his arms and hands totally so they just wake him up if I keep them undone which inturn aggrevates him more.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Why do you wanna break him of it? If he sleeps well with it, then I say let it be. There is no harm in continuing the swaddling.

It's starting to aggrevate him. I know he doesn't want it anymore but he also doesn't like it when he keeps waking himself up. I figured if there was a way to slowly break him of it he would be happy. My pedi doesn't want him in it much longer either, he said it can hinder his progress I don't know why it would but that's what he said.

Oh I got it. I was just curious. That's how we broke Paige, she just got soooo angry when we would try and force her to be swaddled so we just stopped. Try just swaddling his arms and leave his legs out to try the baby steps. Other than that, I'm not sure.

try the woombie...he can move his arms alittle more freely in it but they aren't going all over the place.

Maybe start with leaving just one arm out?

I'm not sure I'll know when to stop swaddling her, hopefully it's obvious! She struggles now like she's frustrated, but that's only if she's fussy. Once she calms down it's okay. And the last 2 nights she's slept 7 hours in a row, so I'm not changing ANYthing right now lol

YAY for 7 hours. That's awesome hun. I don't blame you I wouldn't want to either.

The last few nights Brevan has been waking up every 6 and he was doing every 7-8 so I was a little bummed but I guess I still can't complain. I'm still getting sleep.

Cherie would struggle around that age when we first put her in it, but she still needed it to sleep. We tried the 1 arm thing, but she would still wake herself, and she would get so mad and worked up every time she woke herself, so I dealt w/ the short struggle when we first swaddled each night. I'm not a dr, but I see no reason to break if baby still needs a swaddle to sleep. What exactly is swaddling while baby is on his back asleep going to hinder, I wonder? Sleep is extremely necessary for a baby, and I'd be more worried about baby sleeping for proper brain development.

I'll have to get into it further with his doctor at his next appt. He mentioned it hindering mobility.

I'd really be curious as to his answer to that. I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around that. While I know it's anecdotal evidence, I know a few babies that were swaddled past 6 months w/ no issues. I would love to see where he got this information from (because I'm one of those annoying patients who never takes a dr's word for something. Lol. I need proof.)

Yeah I'll let you know what he says. i wasn't too worried about it because I didn't plan on stopping for another few months anyway. I'm the same way though I always ask a million questions when I go. My doctor is so patient bless his heart. I seriously take up alot of time when I go with him.

Haha, you sound a lot like me! Thankfully, Cherie's dr is pretty good about it, too.

My friend still swaddles her 17 month old.... yes 17 month old, she can't fall asleep without it............... whatever floats your boat I guess!

We use the Sleep Sack, Dexter likes having his arms free, but they wake him up too, and he smacks his nuk out of his mouth! I usually have to hold it in for him until he's in a deep sleep.

I am not realy sure. Violet never did like having her arms swaddled so we always swaddled from the waist down, when she started in her own crib I just didn't swaddle her one night. She uses a sleep sack and pretty much sleeps in a frog legged position! hahaha.... I have seen those Woombies another poster mentioned, maybe try one of those out??? Good luck!
