Sorry it's taken me SOOO long to post this ladies - it's really difficult to get on here much lately as Nikolas wants me to hold him the WHOLE day!
Contractions began at home at about 6:45pm on May 13th. I wasn't sure if they were real or not - but they were continuing!! I went to bed about 11pm and was woken up by much stronger contractions just after midnight. I walked around a bit and then woke up DH at 1am. He wasn't sure they were real either - but I convinced him! I took a nice hot shower and it really helped make the contractions feel a bit better. My mom got to our house about 2:30am - about 1/2 hour after she got here, my water broke! As there was some meconium in it, I called my midwife and we went to the hospital.
I got to the hospital about 4am. When the midwife checked me, I was 1-2 cm. The contractions were getting worse and were making me throw up. My actual midwife came at 6:30am. When she checked me, I was already 3-4cm, 75% effaced. They gave me an IV as I couldn't keep anything down anymore. I also asked for something for the pain - they gave me Nubain and some Gravol to help me sleep. This is where I'm a little vague for time. I was sleeping in between contractions and squeezing DH's hand with every one. When my painkillers were wearing off, she checked me again and I was 7.5 - 8 cm. I couldn't get another shot of Nubain cause it was too close so she offered (and I willingly accepted!!!) some nitrous oxide. I've had the nitrous at the dentist before and know how it feels, but I didn't feel it was working. DH and the midwife said they could see it was working. The next time she checked me, I was 9.5 cm, she said that there was just a little lip left. I started to feel some major back pains, so the midwife gave me some warm saline injections.
At this time, they called in my mom and BFF cause it was go time. It must have been close to 1pm. The midwife was concerned cause he was coming sunny-side up. I was closing my eyes in between pushes and trying to ignore the room. I had my midwife, the back-up midwife, the student - my mom, my bff and of course me in the room. I started to hear a bit of concern with the midwives - Nikolas' hr was dropping in between contractions - they called in the OB/GYN. I wasn't totally listening - except to push. I didn't want to hear any negative talk. It was funny - the doc's cell started to ring and his ringtune was "Sexual Healing"
I was pushing for over 2 hours in the end. I was exhausted. I somehow turned Nikolas and he came out sideways. I needed a bit of help to get him out with a low vacuum. I had some pretty bad tears (some 3rd degree) - but he was perfect!
Nikolas was born at 2:52pm on May 14th at 8lbs, 4oz and 20 inches long. He scored 9 on his Apgar.
Here are some long-overdue pics from his birth. (photobucket is giving me probs- I will try again soon)
