Hey guys! I realized i never posted about Michaels 6 month's doctors appointment so i thought i'de just say he's doing great... he was 11lbs 11oz then and 23 1/2 inches long! He's in the 50th% percentile for both for his adjusted age so he's doing great. The doc told us we can go ahead and start giving him some rice cereal or food if we want though he obviously doesnt need it for nutritional value yet its just to start him getting use to having something in his mouth and it will help tighten his mouth muscles... whatever that means Otherwise there wasnt really much going on with the appointment, he said he's doing great and he got his 6 month shots.

Sooo then Monday Michael had his surgery to fix his bilateral hernias in his groin area. It was a super long day, his surgery was scheduled for 10:45am so he couldnt eat past 2am... he woke up to eat but didnt really finish so when his surgery didnt start until almost 1 we were starting to get nervous a freak out was on its way. Luckily, he slept almost all morning... Mommy and Daddy were starving though! So he went back finally at 12:30, looking adorable in his tiny hospital gown The surgery took an hour and a half when the doctor finally came out and told us he had the worst set of hernias he's seen in years. It was completely inflamed and there was a lot of tissue and it was just a mess in there, he kept saying it was very "tedious". When we got back to see him my poor baby finally realized he was hungry and didn't feel good so he was screaming like a maniac. I felt so bad for him We finally got some formula for him but he was soooo grumpy for the rest of the day. He cried so much he was hoarse and now he has a cough He had a bit of a rough night but as of Tuesday morning he's completely fine, you cant even tell he's had anything done The doctor said he's in no pain and the only special care he needs is no full body bath for a week. We also got a surprise visit from Michae'ls favorite NICU nurse who reads his blog and knew he would be back in the hospital. We love her and we think its so awesome that she took the time to come up and visit him. Anywho, so we're back home now and he's doing great, besides his two bloody scars (they have steri strips on his incisions) you wouldnt know anything had happened to him.

Tomorrow's our first road trip with the lil guy, we're going to Ohio (5 hours away) to visit my mom and go to my sisters bridal shower. Wish us luck! Lol, Michael can be VERY moody about whether or not he wants to be in his carseat. I'll be checking in but probably scarce until Sunday night so have a good weekend ladies!

So glad that they were able to take care of his hernias...poor baby...and super sweet that his favorite nurse came to visit him afterward...

Is this the only surgery he will need, or will there be a followup?
How did you know about the hernias, or is it common in pre-mies?

Have a good trip...only suggestion I have is put him in the carseat full of food and sleepy...if he can sleep for 3-4 hours of it, then you can take a pit stop, play with him for a while, and hopefully the last of it wont be too bad - GOOD LUCK

The nurse pic made me cry! She looks so happy and he looks so content in her arms, I haven't met a lot of nurses like that

Glad to hear he got through the surgery like a champ!

Hey sorry it took so long to get back to you we just got home.

As far as we know this is his only other surgery but he *might* need one in the future for his kidneys. He also has hydronephrosis (kidney dilation) but it can resolve on its own as he grows so we're not sure how that is going to pan out. He has a scan on August 13th to see how they are doing, in the meantime he just takes antibiotics every day to make sure he doesnt get an infection.

Hernias as i've heard are VERY common in preemies, most of the babies on the NICU board have had them so over there its not really a "big deal" if that makes sense Mikey was lucky since he was able to put off his surgery until he was over 10 lbs (he was 12.25 on surgery day) so that lessens the complications from it and of course anesthesia is a little less scary with them being bigger etc. Even with his hernias being really bad he still has only about a 1% chance that he'll need a repeat surgery someday. I'll be honest in that i dont know much about the logistics of hernias but hopefully its all resolved now and it wont be a problem again!
