I just found out I failed my 1 hour glucose test. Now I have to do a 2 hour one (thought they just went from 1 hour to 3 hour so I am not complaining about sitting in the lab for 2 hours instead of 3). But I have to fast for 12 hours before it. SUCKS!

I did ask the nurse how "bad" I failed and she said they like the number to be lower than 7.8 and mine was 8.7 so I guess not TOO badly but still not good.

Oh no, that stinks! I failed my 1 hour too, but went straight to a 3 hour next and passed that one! The worst part is the fasting beforehand! I was SO hungry afterwards and by the last draw, I almost passed out when I stood up and I broke out into cold sweats and my friend said I was white as a ghost! I recommend bringing some crackers or some other snack in your purse, so you can eat immediately after your final draw! Oh and if you can, bring someone with you so you don't have to drive afterwards if you are feeling sickly and the company is nice when your sitting in the waiting room for that long!
Praying you pass this one!

Don't worry too much... I failed my 1hr, too (I was 7.9) and had to go for the 3 hr and passed with flying colours. I actually did some research on it after I failed, thinking OMG I have GD or something, but no - that test has like a 60%+ false positive rate, and some doctors don't even use it anymore - they say it actually has a higher incidence of false positive in people who COULDN'T have GD because they almost never consume sugar.

If you think about it, it makes sense. They load you up on 50g of glucose (which is more than someone with a healthy diet would *ever* consume all at once) and then use how your body reacts to it to gauge whether you have GD or not.

Well of course if you NEVER eat that much sugar, your body is going to have a major *** moment and you're going to fail the test - your body doesn't know how to cope with that much sugar, because it never has to!

Lots and lots of girls fail the 1 hr and go on to pass the 2 or 3 hr, don't worry too much. And the fasting really isn't that bad, just eat a light snack before bed at around 8 or 9 PM and go for the test at 8 or 9 AM - then have a big breakfast when you get home!

OH - and don't restrict your sugar intake in the days leading up to the test, either. I thought I should, so I looked it up, and apparently restricting your sugar can actually make you fail the 2 hr test, too (because your body isn't used to processing sugar at all.) If anything, try to eat a little bit of extra sugar if you're normally not too big on sweets - your body will get used to processing sugar and it will help you pass! Some doctors even recommend consuming a minimum of 100-150g of carbohydrates each day for the days leading up to the test.

Good luck!!!

I failed my one hour and had to do the three hour... then had to do the one hour again later (which i ended up failing horribly but didnt know because i went into labor instead!). Anyway, i would most definitely take someone with you if you can... besides being really bored you just dont know how you'll react and you might not feel well enough to drive (i didnt). Every person is different, some are fine but i felt horrible after my 3 hour. Maybe i'm just a weirdo but i also thought the juice tasted awful and it really helped me to have a straw so it sort of bypassed my mouth and went right down my throat. Also, you need to add about a half hour onto the time they'll say it is... so like the three hour is actually 3 1/2 (or at least that's how it was for me).

I also failed my 1 hour (barely) and passed the 3 hour with flying colors. I too was very weak by the end of the 3 hour and almost passed out back at work so be careful!

I can't imagine why anyone thinks making a pregnant woman fast is a good idea! Bring lots of snacks Michelle (and a good book to read). Good luck with your 2 hour test.

I also failed the 1 hr and passed 3 hr. I scheduled it for first thing in the morning so most of my fasting was overnight. The worst part for me was just being bored and hungry! I ended up doing my online defensive driving course while there (I actually got a ticket for going FIVE miles over the speed limit!) so two things I really didn't want to do at once! Lol!

Good luck! I thought I was fine after the 3 hour but halfway home I started to get really sick and dizzy so I had to pull into a drive thru and get something to eat. I was really close to passing out which was very scary since I was driving. I completely agree that it is a great idea to bring snacks with you for afterwards. I felt really full after the test, but still needed real food. I would eat a snack after even if you don't feel like it.

Thanks ladies! I attempted to do this test today but the lab misplaced my requisition so I will be trying again tomorrow. I have felt pretty awful so far this morning and I didn't even do the drink/blood test portion - just the fasting. So I know I will need a snack immediately and have lined up DH to drive me to and from the lab so I am not having to drive until I know I can. I will have to get myself to work at some point tomorrow but I am hoping I will feel better after a decent meal (or 2) and some time.

Thanks for the suggestions about snacks and driving. I definitely feel better knowing I am prepared for what may come after the test.

Well that went horribly. I did the fasting and then drank the orange stuff (pretty awful this time around). Then I sat around for a while. At about 5 mins before my one hour blood work I started to feel really sick... but it passed. They took my blood at one hour... and I promptly threw up the rest of the stuff in my stomach. That ended the test... now I wait to see if the doctor is going to make me try again or if he will be ok with just the one hour blood sample.

I felt way better after throwing up but now I am trying to eat and it is not going well. I know I need to get some food into me so I am slowly trying to make my way through some toast. Yuck - I hate feeling sick. Baby L hates it too!

I hope you don't have to do it again. Sounds like a miserable time. Hope your doc takes pity on you and accepts those 1 hour results. And, I hope they come back normal
