Friend's of ours, who have a 1 month old, recently told us that we can't use baby powder on in a baby's diaper. Has anyone else heard this before? Or know the reason why? I was just curious, because when I worked at the daycare 7ish years ago, we used it on most of the babies.

it has to do with the talc in the powder. It apparently can cause cancer (apparently can be compared to asbestos)...they make talc-free powder that you can use or use cornstarch based powder.
when I was 2 I apparently got hold of a huge, brand new bottle of powder and shook it all over my bedroom. My mom said it was a huge cloud of powder in the arir when she came in so glad they found it can cause cancer now!!!!

I so did not know that! I'll have to let my cousins know about that so they start using talc free.

Ya we always inform new mom's in work about talc.
The size of particles is so small that they are easily carried in the air like dust and can reach even the smallest areas of the lung.
There have been numerous reports of babies having life-threatening episodes from inhaling too much powder. talc can cause pneumonia, inflammation (or swelling) of the airways of babies,

Children's Hospital in New Orleans, La. will NOT allow you to use baby powder because of the risk of suffocation. In fact if your child is a patient there and they see baby powder being used, they first tell you not to use it and after that first warning they are legally allowed to block you from your child and bring charges against you because you are then intentionally putting your child at risk.
Crazy, huh??

That came from the hospital itself. I found that out when my friends son was there. I thought it was a bit extreme (figured it was just a nurse with an attitude or something) so I asked another friend who IS a nurse there and she said that yes, baby powder is a big no-no and if you use it after you've been told not to they can take those actions because you are aware of the dangers and are continuing to put your child in danger.

We were told not to use baby power during one of our child birth classes at the hospital, for the same reasons people mentioned on here. otherwise i would have never known that.
They also said not to use lotion on the baby for the first few weeks.

I heard that too, because of the small size of the particles getting into their lungs... I still use it, but I use the corn starch stuff (talc-free) and not on Izzy's bum - she has this weird thing where no matter how often I bathe her, her hands get gummy and smelly and full of hair because she NEVER un-clenches her fists. Ever. So putting the baby powder in them keeps them "lubricated" enough that they don't collect fuzzies and stuff so much! LOL
