My good friend just told me last night that the other day she lost her baby boy at 20 weeks pregnant due to listeriosis! Her family and her ate out to Subway's and chinese restaurant in the same day and overnight, her family had been puking all night. She's not sure which restaurant caused listeriosis. She had queasy stomach and puked next morning. She thought it was just morning sickness. Come later, she went to hospital and found out her baby was dead due to listeriosis! She had to have D&C.
She told me not to eat deli meat, hot dogs, unwashed veggies, chinese, mexican, etc. I freaked out cuz yesterday I ate 2 hot dogs at the football game.. one was from concession stand (it was in warmer box tho) and one from grill at the tailgate party but i dont know how long the hot dog has been standing after grilling.)
I'm freaked out!!!! I asked my dad if he got sick. He said no. I texted my brother to see if he's fine from eating the hot dog from grill. (just got text from brother- he didnt eat the hot dog)

I spent most of the night talking to my friend listening to her. This is her 2nd stillborn loss. Please pray for her to get through this.

Are they SURE it was listeria?? How far along with her first baby was she? Do they know what caused her first loss? (sorry i have so many questions) It is great to be careful...you never know and i have been more cautious than normal (don't eat lunch meat or much sausage anyway...) That is so sad, i'm very sorry for her loss!!!

I'm sure you've read on this but here is a good link:

That's so sad. We had a big listeriosis recall in Canada last year of deli meats. I don't eat deli meat (or hot dogs) anyway but it's still scary.

Chinese food and Mexican food should be safe as long as it's cooked. Be still it's good to be aware wherever you eat out.

And always wash all of your veggies (even if they say it's pre-washed), you never know where E.coli or salmonella may be lurking.

to you and your friend.

Yah she was tested for listeria.

Her first pregnancy loss was 14 weeks. The baby boy didn't develop properly and she was forced to have D&C.

I'm never eating deli meat, hot dogs or any kinds that could cause listeria til I give birth and probably won't eat it til I'm done BF. This hit close at home. She's my good friend and we talked almost every day about our pregnancy. She is blaming herself for eating Subway and Chinese.

I am so sorry about your friend! I'm also really glad that i read this because i was thinking about having subway today. Also, ever since the 2nd tri I've been on occasion eating deli meat or a hot dog... i know the hot dogs are safe because i like them burnt to a crisp so they are literally cooked until they are black. But I even had a ham sandwich today for my ride home from Maine! I thought since the risk of m/c is down after the 2nd tri it would be safer to eat that stuff. Never again!

AWWW Aaron that is so sad... I wonder if she could have possibly come in contact with it before that day?? It just seems so fast. It would be so hard not to blame yourself in that situation but really it's probably a freak incident. I know according to that link that subway recommends not eating their deli meat. And luckily they change gloves between every sandwich so there is little room for cross contamination if you avoid deli meats...i personally haven't had lunch meat but i have had sandwiches, its still scary. I know you've been cautious about listeria for a while so i'm sure this just makes that worse for you.

I'm so sorry for your friend. It's very scary. Also remember the other foods where listeria may hide, such as soft cheeses like feta (if they're unpasteurized).

I'm so sorry! That's terrible. It's such a freaky thing because it seems so harmless to eat deli meat! I know outbreaks like that have happened though. I think for yourself the onset is usually pretty fast, like within a day or so, so if you're not feeling bad right now you are probably going to be fine. My heart goes out to your friend.

Wow, its very rare to get that. I even ate some cold deli meat during my pregnancy (I had the other deli meat micorwaved or toasted). That's so scary....but try not to let it freak you out!!!!
