Nikolas has been having some SERIOUS gas problems the past few nights. He falls asleep and then gets woken up by PAIN. We do everything we can to get it out - but sometimes he screams and screams. I try to bring his legs up and do the bicycle. I try to rub his tummy in a clockwise circle. I try to rub his back.
I try EVERYTHING. He's had gripe water... the doctor doesn't want to give him anything.
Last night I managed to get it out... I had him screaming on his back and brought his knees up and he farted and farted and farted away. It was SO relieving for him and he finally slept.
Please HELP!!

awwwww poor kid. I was going to suggest gripe water or mylicon. Sounds like him screaming helps work it out...keep going mama, you'll get it. You think its from him starting solids?

Nah - he's always been a gassy boy Kate. We have gone through this before - but just not as bad. He's not having anything that induces gas - we are avoiding peas and beans. I'm gonna call the doc tomorrow cause I can't go through another night like this.
ETA: Do you think this may be colic?

Are you willing to try Mylicon? Siera used to have BAD gas for a few months as a baby. Have you started giving him baby food? Maybe his tummy isn't ready for it if you are.
I used to just walk around with Siera but kind of bounce with each step so it would force her to burp. I hope it gets better soon
ETA: There's a football hold that worked with my niece (she had colic). I hope it helps!

Can you try bouncing him on your knee? I wish there was an easy answer for you.

Rayanne does not get gas as bad as Nikolas, but she has had gas. For her what I find sometimes works is putting her on my leg (her chest on my leg and her head and arms on one side, legs on the other.) I support her bottome with my hand (I only put her over one leg) and pat her back with the other...this will often help get the gas out. Tummy times does too...??? I'm sure you have tried these, but this is what works for her. I also have before giving her a medicine called Kolik. It is for gas. And it does help work it out, and it is alcohol free (apparently some medicines like this aren't.) I hope that you find something that works soon Liss, or your dr. has some suggestions.

You're bf-ing, right? Is there anything that has changed in your diet? I remember when I worked in daycare this was a little boy w/ terrible gas for several weeks, and it ended up it was because his mom was eating broccoli. Could you try eliminating something from your diet for a few days? Maybe that will help?

Bouncing Lilyan on my knee helps. She LOVES to do that and it helps get gas out (mostly burps for us). She used to get terrible gas, so we tried gentlease formula but eventually had to try soy because it just worked better for her gas and belly. Poor guy, I know it breaks your heart to hear him scream like that!!  {{{HUGS}}}

I was going to suggest little tummy's gas drops. Also he may not be ready for solids yet. Bella had trouble with them and gas at 4 months but we waited until she was almost 6 months and that made a HUGE difference! Some babies, especially ones who are gassy, have problems with solid foods early.
BIG HELP: we have a tummy heating pad that you warm in the microwave, wrap it around their bellies and hold them. It helps BIG time!! I'm trying to find the link

Ugh, I'm SO sorry you're having to deal with this (and your little guy too of course) They do have over the counter gas drops, but I've actually never had to use them yet. Also, (I'm sure you already do this) but make sure and burp him REALLY good. Sometimes I pat Camden 100+ times just to make sure I get all the air out. Also, what kind of bottles are you using? We use Dr. Browns, and the Playtex Ventaire advance to prevent gas and LOVE them. Finally, are you feeding him anything different, or are you eating anything different(if you're BFing)

My only suggestion is the same as Marci. Josie gets a lot of gas out on her tummy. Something about how she sticks her head up and her legs out like a seal makes her fart a lot. I may try that warm pack thing though!

Thanks so much for all of your suggestions ladies.
Doc confirmed that Nikolas has colic.
He said that we are doing everything right and keep doing it.
Marci - that Kolik stuff is Grip Water and the doc said to keep using it more often... he also suggested baby tylenol / tempra. He said it will get better and to keep at it.
I'm BFing and he gets a bit of solids... I may back off a bit on the solids but the doc said that he was doing well with them - so I dunno.
I will look into that heat thing Lyz and Lee Ann! It looks cool!

That doesn't really sound like colic.... it sounds like gas, but that is my opinion. Poor little guy.
My daughter got really bad gas from rice cereal. She would wake up screaming too. We had to switch her from rice to oatmeal. She did alot better with that. Mylicon didn't work for us either.... we did the bicycle and stuff and bringing her knees to her chest helped her expell it.

has he always screamed like this? If he just started it doesn't sound like colic. In fact, colic is supposed to get BETTER by 4 months!
If he just started, to me it sounds like his body trying to get used to solid foods and the wonderfl 4 month regression. But, that's just my opinion so you should stick to what your dr. says. Hope he feels better soon!!
