Great article Paula! Especially since i just started down this journey a week ago! I have to ask (hoping not to scare myself) how long that pain lasted for? Seeing as though my body put me through gestational diabetes, pre eclampsia, high blood pressure it finally cut me a break and provided me with my milk supply almost immediately. My daughter has not had formula since the day after she was born (she was in the NICU for the first 3 days and is now in the newborn nursery hooked up to monitors and not allowed home yet due to apnea). Anyway, while i am able to provide her with breastmilk, we haven't quite mastered breastfeeding. I'm not discouraged though, she's 5-6 weeks early so i knew she wasn't going to hop right on. We do okay with the nipple shield but she rarely gets even one cc according to the scale. Just wanted to share my little tidbit
Can i ask why your daughter was in the NICU?

OH MY GOSH!!!! I almost started to cry when reading your article!!!!!! I am 4 weeks PP and just this week I finally got a grip on BF but had to buy a nipple guard to get through the pain and cracked/bleeding nipples. I was crying every 3 hours, because I knew it was going to be feeding time and the pain would start!
THE SAME EXACT thing happened with us at the hospital as you, Harlow had a great latch, everything looked perfect, the nurses and doctors all commented on how great she did immediately and how much colostrum I had right away, my milk was over abundant starting on day 3...only it was just so dang painful I couldn't figure out why and everyone just looked at me like I was being a baby or something because it "appeared" like she was doing everything perfectly!! We even went back to the hospital to the LC for advise because I was so determined to not give up! Everyone (MIL, mom and DH) was just telling me to quit BFing and it would be OK, but just like you, I am too stubborn (and cheap!!!).
Honestly, we are still not in the pain-free zone and we still take awhile to get going each session, but I'm not quitting! And it is so encouraging to read your article, so thank you so much for sharing! I know it will get better for me AND Harlow. And now I know there are other people who have gone through the same thing. End of novel, lol!!

that's a great article. I think you were very tasteful in both saying you love being a BF'ing momma but that you aren't opposed to formula. I gave up quickly and am saddened I didn't stick it out. So, it's nice to see a BF'ing momma who gives us formula feeding momma a break
Congrats on being published!! That's a great accomplishment. Be sure to put it in her baby book!

Bfing sucked for me too at first, but josie had latch problems that it took trip trips to the lc to fix. Once the latch was fixed, the pain was mostly gone within a few days (2 weeks or so pp) it wasn't completely gone, but I stopped curling my toes into the carpet and gritting my teeth!

My kiddos weren't in the NICU, but were about 3 weeks early and were not good at nursing. I BF and then bottle fed pumped milk at almost every feeding for the first month +. After about 2 weeks, I only gave them bottles at night before they were so bad at BFing and I was only getting 10-20 minutes of sleep at a time. Keep it up and she'll eventually get it.
