Just to warn off the bat, this is not so much a debate, as a "huh?" and wondering if anyone else can chime in what this means ...

This is a paragraph from a news story about a walk organized by a breastfeeding coalition in the US (story here: http://www.ledger-dispatch.com/life/lifevi...amp;topStory=1) that I happened across today.

Quote:
The facilitator of such groups, Cheryll Haight, a delivery nurse at the hospital, told the Ledger Dispatch during the walk, that there are three reasons mothers should breastfeed their children. "Breastfeeding makes children smarter, healthier and better looking," she said, adding that "cow milk is for cows and human milk is for babies."[/b]
So, I know that the "smarter" part refers to research regarding the IQs of breastfed babies, and the "healthier" part refers to the issues of immunities/allergies/lower obesity, etc. ...

... but I don't get the "better looking" part?

Is there something in BF research that has made some reference to children's appearance or skin tone or something??

I'm not sure if she's being serious or not.

Thoughts?

I think she's off her rocker. Looks are genetic. You're going to look to the same no matter what you are fed.

Unless she is making the reference that thinner people are better looking simply by being thinner in which case she's even more off her rocker than I first thought.

Sam is freakin' adorable. If your milk is the source of her beauty, then maybe I should have you nurse my babies.

That reminds me of a saying...

There is only one perfect child in the world... And every mother has it.

See, that was the part that confused me so much, because clearly it is obvious that in fact *I* have the cutest baby in the world.

With my kids, they look like clones of each other (other than eye color) but formula-fed ds had horrible horrible skin problems for the first 8 months of his life... which mysteriously cleared up when I started making homemade formula. Looking at the ingredients of store-bought formula in hindsight, there are sooooo many items on the list that we now know he is intolerant to (particularly the hidden sources of MSG).

The first thing that came to mind was the fact that formula is highly tied to skin problems, eczema, etc - and even obesity.

So - perhaps thats what shes referring to?

So... since my daughter was BF and later supplemented, does that mean she's only average-looking?

What a nice thing for a nurse to say...

hehe.. that quote gave me an idea for a blinky

So, that is why my second is so much cutter...he got some breastmilk, while my first did not. Ironically, my second looks like me and my first like my husband . Just kidding, both my boys are perfectly adorable.

So small babies are not as pretty as chubby babies?

I beg to differ I have also seen plenty of chubby FF babies.

my daughter (who is 2 and still nursing) has always been tiny for her age. She doesn't have the rolls, but i still find her adorable.

Ds was a very chubby baby with rolls and he was FF from birth. My nephew was the same way and he was given only formula. My niece was never given formula and was tiny. She never had rolls.

Saying BF babies are better looking is a load of bull. You cannot look at a person and say whether they were BF of FF. When you have legitimate studies, why would you resort to petty, ignorant assumptions that have zero basis as truth.

My daughter has been slender since birth and she was EBF for 6 months and then continued BM plus formula and solids after that. All babies seem to be different. Some people can be very slender and look fine, and others can be the same weight and look emaciated. I think you're just built the way you are and that's it.

The only other thing I could think she means besides skin might be orthodontics - since nursing develop different facial muscles & helps in teeth alignment.. *shrugs* I really don't know. I happen to think DS is darling - he was BF - but he looks a TON like me & I was FF - so I don't know what that means. LOL

I do think it is silly to throw stuff out there like that - it just makes the pro-BF thing sound petty & snotty IMO when there are so many other things that ARE measurable & great about BF - I would prefer her to focus on that! (like the health benefits to mom & baby, etc)
