President George W. Bush ducked a pair of shoes hurled at his head — one shoe after the other — in the middle of a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
Both shoes narrowly missed their target and thumped loudly against the wall behind the leaders.
"Don't worry about it," the president said as the room erupted into chaos.[/b]

In Iraqi culture, throwing shoes at someone is a sign of contempt. When U.S. Marines toppled Saddam Hussein's statue on Firdos Square in 2003, the assembled crowd whacked it with their shoes[/b]
I was just coming in to post the same thing. Throwing one's shoes at someone, or showing the bottom of their feet is considered one of the major insult you could render toward a person, in the middle east.
Close ups...
The response....
That was totally wrong, but personally - I think Bush handled it very well. And he has a pretty good eye. I watched the tape, and wasn't sure if I would have been able to move so quickly - being caught so off guard like that. Good for him And did you see the room flood with SS/Guards after it happened? B)
I dont think that is appropriate at all. No one deserves a shoe thrown at them, regardless of what they did. I dont condone violence of any kind.[/b]
I agree, as much as I dislike the man, violence is unacceptable. Honestly, I was also a little bit insulted. I feel like he was there serving as a representative for our Country (unfortunately) and the shoe throwing on a day that the governments were coming together was really offensive to me as an American.
I have to agree with Katra. If there is one positive thing I can say about Bush: He has some quick reflexes, I was pretty impressed

I find it fitting. Also, it's a good show that Iraqi's are not pleased with Bush. Although many in this country would disagree
And I agree- he IS quick!! That surprised me [/b]
I just disagree with the violent attempt. I think he should have found a more appropriate way to protest, outside of trying to hit him in the head. I've thought, if I was alone with him in a room - would I hit him/throw something at him, maybe do to him what he's authorized (outside of Geneva Conventions) to do to others just to get him to tell the truth. The thought is there, but reality is that I know it doesn't solve anything and would only bring me down to his level.
The only reason I find it slightly funny is b/c of how quickly he reacted. In all seriousness, though, I thought it was quite offensive.[/b]
I agree.

It was wrong...plain and simple. there was also nothing funny about it. But, I'm not one (being bullied quite a bit in my life) find that anything of that nature is the least bit funny.

To quote Austin Powers, "Who throws a shoe? I mean, really?"
I think this is a GREAT sign of the good we've done in Iraq. Who would have ever thought 6 years ago that an Iraqi could try out for the role of Random Task.

Really? A great sign. Showing a sign of contempt to show the good we've done in Iraq? That's a little backwards, one would think. That's laughable.
The last notable person they threw a shoe at was Saddam Hussein's statue in 2003. I guess Bush reminds them of Saddam Hussein. hmmmm..... And here we are worried about Barrack Hussein Obama's name reminding us of Saddam Hussein, when to the Iraqi people, it's really Bush that reminds them of Saddam Hussein-with no name similarities.
