Riley making biggest cuts in education in 48 years

Last time this happened, DH lost his job because it was his tenure year. He's tenured now so we're okay, but we had JUST bought our house 7 years ago and that March he was cut. It was a rough time for a while until he was hired on in October at the school he's in now.

It makes me thankful he didn't take a job closer to home. During times like these, it's nice to have a solid income.

Some counties in October couldn't make payroll...it wasn't pretty.

Maybe I should STOP buying houses...seems everytime we do, education starts proration.

We can likely thank the Teacher's Union for that lobbying effort.

That does stink Heather... Hopefully some relief will come some way.

Yep, thanks to the union!

That sucks. It always amazes me that they cut education so much. I wonder when people will start realizing that it ALL starts with education. We need to teach the younger generation, and teach them well so they can lead us in the future. It just always amazes me.

I wouldn't care if they cut his salary honestly. I mean, if it meant more people could have jobs, and him still have his.

Being on both ends of the proration kick, I would have gladly welcomed a paycut over no job...

Wonderful for you. Not everyone can afford a paycut these days.

I think you would be surprised who could afford a pay cut if it was a choice between that and having NO pay. Pa's unemployment fund is running out of money. I think a lot of people are about to be in for a rude awakening. A reduced salary is still better than no salary and no unemployment. When the economy turns around again (and it certainly will), the wages will go back up. People need to stop and look at the long term.

Who then do you propose evaluate who can/cannot afford a pay cut? People are already stretched thin these days, 1:10 are currently behind on their mortgage, with 1:7 anticipated before winter thaws. Gotta love what the Bush Administration has done to this country. What a miserable failure.

Well never fear, we now have a Democratic controlled congress to fix everything.. oh, wait...

ETA: To the first part... I'll tell you what. You bankrupt your workplace because you "can't afford a pay cut," and I'll take 1 dollar an hour less at mine. We'll see who's in a better place two years from now.

But that's the thing, it doesn't mean more people would have jobs. There is so much fat to be cut in education- so much is spent on admin costs, and it doesn't have to be that way.

How does it not? The only reason we are having proration is because they can't afford to pay teachers. So...while there is a lot of fat (ie the TEXTBOOK coordinator making 70K for nothing...still haven't figured that one out) but still...they don't cut the fat, they cut the teachers. So, being they aren't going to do that no matter what....i would rather him take a paycut.

Also, Katra, we aren't in a place to do that. But, it would be something we would do if we had to. Who really wants to take a cut in pay, but in the event times are rough...

One thing I don't understand is you guys are all about "heart" but when it comes to pay your all about yourself and no one else.
