If you want to link, click on it, wait until it gives you an error & then replace the "*" with an "i"...since JM has an auto filter it blocks it from coming up.
If you go to the link there is a whole write about up this statue....who made it, why, etc. It is National BF week so it is being unveiled this week.

But what do YOU think about the statue being displayed in a public park (as is intended) and being called "the Landmark Of Breastfeeding" or something like that...
AND - what do you think of them using AJ as the model for this particular subject?

Eh, not really a fan. Not because it's breastfeeding, but because I find it ugly. I didn't like that other sculpture he did of Britney Spears either. There are many beautiful breastfeeding sculptures and other artwork depicting bf'ing out there, this just happens to not be one of them!

As for the AJ factor, I don't really care one way or another if he used her. Honestly, I don't think his art would be famous if he didn't use celebrities, but I respect AJ for bf'ing her twins and being open about it, including publishing pictures of her bf'ing one of them.

And what the heck is with it looking like she is dangling her babies by their heads?! I'm a big fan of the football hold, but we all know that you can't support a baby by their head! It freaks me out a little bit. To be honest, between the weird hold and her weird facial expression, this reminds me more of a robot than a mother.

ETA: I don't think it's inappropriate for public display.

This was actually brought up on another board & I wrote a long post there so I hope you don't mind me basically just copying it & pasting it here....

While the concept of the statue doesn't bother me...I think this statue is ugly & the way she is holding those babies looks awkward if not impossible. I think if he was going to pick a celeb to represent BF it should have been Selma Hayek personally...not Angelina Jolie.

Quote:
Jolie, 33, says she weaned the twins when they were 3 months old. "[That was] about as much as I could do," she says.
News - Angelina Jolie: Breastfeeding Twins "Harder Than It Looks" | Usmagazine.com
(I probably could have found another source...but I have seen this quote a number of places).

By comparison: YouTube - Video of Salma Hayek Breast Feeding
And this is too cute if you ask me...although corny that they quoted her phoenetically:
Quote:
Let me tell you it's toff," agrees Hayek, in that throaty Mexican accent of hers. "You don't know what pain I'm in after two hours, how difficult it was at first. And by the way, the myth that says you lose all this weight when you breast-feed? That is sooo not true. Look," she protests, grabbing her tummy and then reaching for the plate of biscuits the waiter has set down on the table, "it's like, 'Please, everyone, can you stop telling me I look really well?' "

[of breastfeeding] "I'm like an alcoholic," she shrugs. "It's like, I don't care if I cry, I don't care if I'm fat, I'm just gonna do it for one more week, one more month, and then, when I see how much good it is doing her, I can't stop. Eet's a very powerful thing you know.

While I applaud anyone for trying (including AJ)...the fact is that at the end of the day she is hardly the icon of BF nor does she really openly promote it.... You also have to remember he is the same artist that showed Brittney Spears giving birth on all 4's on a bearskin rug....when in fact she had a C-section (and said for her entire pg as far as I know that she wanted a C-section so she wouldn't have to go through the pain of childbirth)...go figure??? I guess he also likes some of the irony of what he creates I guess.

Selma not only BF through a year...but she BFed babies on relief trips as well.... I think she is a better BF "icon" as a celeb of this era than any other I know..... I guess she isn't as flashy or popular as Jolie though.

I also personally find Selma to be more attractive overall than AJ, she certainly is curvier & to me that makes her appear from an artistic standpoint to appear more "motherly" like in the sense of the way fertility goddesses, etc have always been represented... That of course though is besides the point...because that is MY personal preference for body type.

I really don't have a problem with statue being displayed publicly, but I do find it weird as a "landmark for BF" AND I am not sure it supports the case for supporting NIP when they represent BF as a naked woman BFing in such a strange/awkward manner/posture (nothing wrong with the football hold obviously - I have just never seen it look so weird).

Pretty much everything that went through my mind as I was reading the article and looking at the picture was addressed in your last post, Beckie. Basically ditto exactly what you said.

I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one that thought the hold didn't look feasible

I just don't like it. Not because its BF, but because it is a very bad representation of it, and its ugly.

I think it looks ugly, cold, and unemotional. Are those babies bottoms supposed to be suspended in air, how on Earth is she holding them?

Why not a statue of a woman BFing while lovingly holding her baby cradled in her arms, gazing at it? It looks like a scene from a horror movie, like a corpse nursing. Its icky. I think it does nothing to make BFing look better.

Yeah....this. I don't find the statue "lovely" in any way.....very strange looking.

I had no idea she only BF for 3 months. I agree that Selma would have been a better choice, but I don't think this statue was done to promote bf'ing. I think it was to promote his own career and for "shock value" and you're right, Selma isn't famous enough for him. By shock value, I don't mean that public bf'ing is shocking, but I think to him, it may be. I mean, did you see his last sculpture of Britney Spears? I don't exactly think that was to promote a pro-life agenda, as he claimed. It was obviously to shock. Same w/his other sculptures. I'm not a fan.

Big ditto to everything above. The motive for the display of the statue is great, but the execution is hideous!

I think you are right, it was more shock value or his own career, not a nod to BFing.
