Explanation - Elimination communication (EC) is a toilet training practice in which a caregiver uses timing, signals, cues, and intuition to address an infant's need to eliminate waste. Typically the goal is to partially or completely avoid the use of diapers. EC emphasizes communication between the caregiver and child, helping them both become more attuned to the child's innate rhythms and control of urination and defecation. The term "elimination communication" was inspired by traditional practices of diaper-less baby care in less industrialized countries and hunter-gatherer cultures.[1] Some practitioners of EC begin soon after birth, although it can be started with babies of any age.

My honest ones???

I am sure someone will get me for this but my honest thoughts on EC are

ROTFLMAO!

I read about this a lot on another forum and I watched a Discovery Channel thing on it and I just couldn't stop laughing. I think it is so ridiculous and I know I certainly don't have that type of time on my hands. I told DH about it when I saw the thing on TV and he just rolled his eyes at me and said "I gave in to your cloth diapers Sandy... don't push it cause I am not sitting a baby on my lap with a bowl and going SSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" I think he thought I was wanting to try it, but I certainly was NOT!

I feel the same way, I think it's totally and utterly ridiculous.

If someone wants to do it, have at it. It's not for us.

This is something I would have to read on because I know nothing about. Its too late for us now because my youngest is 4 and only wets occasionally at night now.

But the visual of the baby and the bowl is great

I think it could be effective if someone executed it correctly and had the time for it, but it's not for us.

We tried it for a while with ds and it just wasn't for us. Maybe if I wasn't simultaneously dealing with c-section trauma, breastfeeding problems and PPD, it may have worked out... but I really don't have the patience or wherewithal to make it work. I wouldn't exactly call it "ridiculous" just because its outside of our cultural norm, though.

I guess this isn't the first time lately that a topic's been posted that Lash is passionate about. She plans on practicing EC and has some very good information on it. It's not for our family though, I'm so not that dedicated! And like Sandy's DH, mine draws the line at cloth.

I have no desire to take on that kind of time commitment, nor do I really see the point, honestly. I can comminicate and bond with my child without having to follow them around going "need to pee? Need to pee?"

If it's important to someone else, and they feel it helps, have at it. Takes all kinds.

I guess I just dont' understand WHY anyone would actually do this.

What's wrong with diapers until the child is old enough to be potty trained?

Potty whispering? Hehe.

I need this site for our middle child right now! We're having issues with him being only somewhat ready to train. I joked the other day I was going to cut some holes in his pants or get him leg warmers since it's way too cold for him to be running around naked.

Some people think diapers are awful and unnecessary and that's not even going in to "health issues" or sanitary things. No matter what route you choose there is still a great impact on earth whether it be sposies or cloths. EC means you will never need to use a diaper. Period.
