What do you guys think of the appropriateness of the white man with corn rows?

I did side with the captain on that one, not because the guy was white but because I think cornrows are unprofessional for a uniformed police officer. That policy was also enforced across the board within that precinct for every officer -- male, female, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, etc.

Ditto. No one in the department Alex's dad works for is allowed to have cornrows, no matter who they are or what their color. The men have to keep their hair short and professional (unless undercover) and the women must wear their hair short or tied back in a bun. No acceptions.

The policy is in place to prevent people from dying their hair unnatural colors. As a police officer, it is not professional.

I think she is going against the policy with her hair. It's an unnatural shade of bright red. It sucks that she is being punished for it, while other women are not, but maybe they will have to change their color as well.
You didn't answer this:

Also, if it was such a problem, why didn't they address it with the officer while she was in the academy? She states she has had the same hair color for 7 years, yet the "problem" was only addressed 2 years ago with this one particular captain. Also, she states that other African American officers have blonde hair, and that is acceptable. African American women do not naturally have blonde hair, so why would blonde hair on an African American be acceptable and red would not?

I'll agree it looks red, so I'd say that according to their rules the "boss" was wrong. However, it might be hard for some people to take her seriously when it's kind of a wild color of red. And yes, it's very unnatural looking on her.

I wonder why it appears she wasn't backed up by the union? It's been many years since I have worded a union job, but i do remember that if there was a repremand you could (and should) contact your union rep to be present to oversee such repremend. I can't imagine her union rep would allow things to get to this point without there being some grain of truth.

Then again maybe Phili. is not within the police union.

Looks like a natural shade of red to me....

Sounds like the captain has it out for a few select members of the force there.....
