The city's mayor and board of aldermen on Tuesday agreed to begin working with the city attorney and other officials to draw up a new ordinance that would ban city residents from wearing sagging, revealing, low-slung pants.
Quote:
Officials say they have noticed an increase in male residents wearing excessively baggy britches that expose their underwear -- a fashion faux pas that needs to come to an end
A city near me is going after "saggy pants". How do you feel about this ordinance?
Well, as long as they are making it not discriminate by gender. If guys can't wear pants that show their underwear, then they have to ban girls from wearing the same baggy pants and also ban girls from showing their butt crack and/or thong (on purpose). And I really wish that walking around with your hand down the front of your pants counted as "public lewdness" or something, but apparently it doesn't.
eta: I meant to the OP. I agree that cops should enforce the noise laws when they come up on a vehicle breaking them. I doubt it's that onerous, and there are good safety reasons for it.

seems pretty funny to me. I can't see how they can do it though, it would infringe on a lot of rights, unless they are only focussing on indecent exposure??
Is it actually indecent exposure to show your underwear?
Quote:
Indecent exposure is a crime that is defined as exposing one's genitals or socially deemed "private parts" (such as behind or breasts) in a public place where others are present and may witness the act. A person who commits indecent exposure does so intentionally with an understanding that his/her conduct will likely alarm and offend others. Indecent exposure is often performed for the offender's personal sexual excitement or satisfaction, though in some cases it is a form of social rebellion.

The definition of indecent exposure has changed throughout time and place, as what is considered indecent is often socially defined. Many lawmakers have had difficulty creating and implementing laws which are founded on social and cultural mores. Indecent exposure can have varying effects depending on its intent and context. Despite this variance, many laws will prosecute those charged with indecent exposure the same
I think it's ridiculous. I always thought "fashion police" was a joke. I can't believe they are wasting time & money on worrying about not liking a fashion trend. No wonder we don't get nearly enough important stuff done in this country when things like saggy pants get mistaken as "important issues" that need addressing. In the 60's several cities had similar ideas about miniskirts...you see where that got them. Any penalty could be fought in court as it violates one's right to freedom of expression (that pesky constitution - always getting in the way of oppressing the citizens & all). You cannot have a city dress code. It violates our rights. I don't want to wear saggy pants. I don't want to look at *your* wannabe prison-sag pants. I STILL think *you* have a right to wear them.

Anyway, I don't like it. It is not indecent exposure, and if we are going to go after butt crack exposure, please give all citizens the right to write tickets! I have seen plenty and they are not pretty!!

Right! I see lots of cracks a day, everyone would be getting fined.

So.. no, it's not. I live in a neighborhood where pretty much everyone wears the pants below their bottom. However, they wear underwear usually up to the belly button, sometimes just to their waist. There are no actual body parts exposed, and not even butt crack. Just underwear.
Will they also go after all the older men who moon everyone every-time they bend over? or is it going to be based on age? I'm more offended by the ugly old man butt cracks than seeing the underwear, to me the underwear just looks stupid- not offensive.

Well I was wondering if the bolded part below could be the showing of underwear as being indecent

Anyone I've heard complain about baggy pants say it looks stupid, but don't think it's offensive. Every my great mother just said it looks really dumb. A fashion trend being stupid and being indecent are different. I don't think most of society thinks underwear counts as indecent exposure.. it just counts as looking ridiculous.
I agree that even though it looks stupid, as long as clothing is still covering the body I don't really see how it can be offensive. My neighbor apparently thinks it is cool to wear his shorts right under his butt cheeks and have them hang down to his ankles. I guess the toddlers that live there want to follow in his footsteps, with their diapers that are sagging down to their knees (literally). The other day it was so bad you could see a gap between her body and the sagging crotch of the diaper.
Think of it this way; if they commit a crime whilst wearing baggy pants AND a cop has to chase them on foot... they won't get very far with those pants
