Benjamin had a brand new one, but to this day I have no idea why. He NEVER slept in it. He's been in my bed since he came home from the NICU.

We were lucky that we didn't spend any money on the one we had. (It was used but we only used it for a change table.) It really was just a place to store things. We did give it away.

His grandmother bought it for him brand new. I tried to tell her to wait a few months, but you know how that conversation probably went. The one time I attempted to put him in it, he was 13 months old. He didn't appreciate that one iota and dove out of it head first, picked himself up off the floor, walked past me and got back in my bed. I just knew he'd broken his neck and I'm pretty sure I used up one of my lives that night.

But after that diving incident, I packed it up and sent it to her house. I never made another attempt to put him in his crib again.

Bleh. I hate stuffed animals. DD has two.. that's it. She does have stuff in her crib... err.. toddler bed.. (we just made the transition two days ago) and it's only because she asks for it as she's going to bed. So I either give her the book/doll/animal/etc. or she has a big fit before going to bed.

But she is two, and it's usually only a few things (sometimes it gets out of hand...). 7 month old DD has nothing in her play pen (which she rarely sleeps in as she mostly cosleeps with us).

This.

Haven't used one with any of my babies. *I* have tons of stuffed animals from when I was a kid. I'm convinced they come alive when people aren't around.

Don't let him sleep with any- but at 5 months he owns about 25 stuffed animals

one of my aunts just gave him a Steiff bear, and he loves it. He will just look at him and then hug him and start giggling like a little mad man.

I'd say until 1 year no. there is a safety issue putting a stuffed animal into a crib with a child who is not old enough to move it (but is old enough to roll around). Same logic as a bumper or a pillow. you dont give an 8 month old a pillow incase they land face down in it.. teddy bear is no different.

that being said. I've had one since the day I was born in bed with me. I'm 26 and only recently have I been able to go with out it for long periods of time... lol... guess I should admit I bought a super soft fuzzy blanket and put it on the bed and didn't need the animal.

I HATE stuffed animals and we don't have them in the crib until around a year or so. Even then, it's 1 special one, not a bunch of them.

We never did stuffed animals when DD was young b/c we coslept, no reason for fifty thousand animals in MY bed lol Once we transitioned her to her own bed around 3 years old, she was free to have what she wanted...and then that grew out of control and she was free to pick 5 of the 50,000 animals she had and the rest went in storage...and then THAT grew out of control and she was free to pick another 5...and on and on it goes. She does have 3 consistent animals lately - her ladybug PillowPet (she has about 5 PillowPets, but this one she actually sleeps on), her "Beary" which is a blue bear my mom sent her for Valentine's day, and "NaNa" which is a stuffed animal that looks like a Siberian Husky.

How does an average 8-month-old not know how to roll over or push something away from their face? That confuses me.

I don't know. The only thing I can think of is that maybe some babies are dangerously heavy sleepers? or maybe the real danger lies with babies who are developmentally delayed or have other health issues to begin with?

Bahaha... my kids are kinda odd, but yes, they actually do. Em lines hers up on the couch (she has about 10 different ones - my MIL keeps buying them for EVERY holiday - and I do mean EVERY holiday, Easter, Halloween, etc., etc.) and has "conversations" with them (which is kind of a big deal since she's nonverbal for the most part). She also tries to feed them.

As for the original question - I think my kids were close to a year old before they slept with them.
