Do you think this amount is necessary or outrageous?

Also downtown Toronto is basically going to be shut down during the summit, effecting businesses, traffic, transit and the over all downtown atmosphere. Thoughts on this?

Quote:
The price tag includes $160 million for hospitality, infrastructure, food safety and extra staffing. That amount is in addition to the $933-million security bill the Tories revealed earlier this week.

The official price tag for security at last year's G20 summit in Pittsburgh was listed at $18 million US, according to municipal and U.S. federal officials.

Presidential candidates talk about how they're going to fix the national debt while they simultaneously spend millions (billions?) on their campaign. (I realize there are various laws etc etc, but it still seems ironic to me to spend millions of dollars telling people where you're going to pull millions of dollars from).

It's completely necessary.

I'll have to show you my pics of Air Force One and the deek.. I think I have Japan's too. Anyway, I'm sure if you look up Calgary's hosting of this, you'll see how the whole event works.

We have to protect the world leaders man.

It would be awesome if they'd have their summit at a hunting lodge or something else way out-of-the-way. Money aside, I feel bad for you guys up there having to deal with this.

I agree with you on that. I could see maybe spending this type of money on a money making venture like the Olympics, but just to have people come to your city to "meet" is kind of off in my opinion. Don't they always have protester's at these summits that destroy stuff?

Didn't they actually meet one time at an island or wooded property? I think Bush was there, if I am remembering correctly.

I agree with this

Holland said security for the summits is critical, but the government shouldn't be handed a blank cheque

I'm also wondering what will be on the menu and how much it will cost. I'm assuming they won't cut corners and order out for pizza.

They could hold the summit on Alcatraz and save a bundle.
