We're talking history Shel. History is what we look back on and learn from, not try to continue to put into practice. How offensive does this sound?

If Americans didnt want to be associated with slavery, then it would not still be in our history books today. Its part of our history so we should own it and be proud of it.
DING DING DING!!! We have a winner!

I'm not sure what was the point you were trying to make but there is no reason to "explain" Deuteronomy 13. It's very clear cut and clear what the Lord your God commands you to do and how to do it, in gory detail. If Christians didn't want to be associated with it then it would not still be in the King James version to this day. It's a part of your history so own it and be proud of it. I don't see a lot of room for "witnessing" in the Old Testament and I don't allow people to randomly toss out certain parts of a book they live their entire lives by. If the Christian community considers the Old Testament shameful then they should disassociate themselves from it. Otherwise, people will always attach their faith to such atrocious actions.
I'm sorry. I'll call you Shel, then. My point was the whole book is about learning. That is how Christians were demanded to do things. The Old Testament is history. You have to learn where you came from in order to learn where you're going. What is the point of knowing Jesus died on the cross for our sins without knowing WHY he had to? Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge against God's commands and were thus cast out of the Garden of Eden. The Hebrews started to have idols and behaving immorally even after the 10 Commandments had been created. Sin got so bad that God commanded Noah to build the ark and had to flood the earth in order to cleanse it. The earth was cleansed, and humans took back over but we're always going to be sinners. Rather than constantly kill off his beautiful creations, God sacrificed his only son so that we could be saved. The Old Testament is evidence of why he had to do that. It is gory and it is bloody. It's tragic, but it doesn't make me any less of a Christian. Instead it sets an example for how I'd RATHER live my life.

Americans had slaves and burned women and men for being witches. We're fighting bloody, bloody wars now, and why? Hell I don't even know. But it doesn't make me any less American. Not all my history is pleasing to me, but it doesn't change who I am. And I can't disassociate myself with them just because they're not all very pretty. They'll always be a part of my heritage. Just like the Old Testament will always be a part of the Christian heritage. If that is not what you want to teach your kids, I understand. You asked why it was in the Bible and I thought I might help explain since you seemed to not be getting an answer. Again, I'm really sorry if that was considered "butting in."

Also, as it shows in my siggy, you spelled my name wrong too. It's Stephenie, not Stephanie.

What message are you getting out there? That people can choose to be religious or not? People already know this without you being "militant"

There is no flavor of the month club. Your POV is in the extreme (only you) minority. There is no "Let's go get Shel" momentum. People just think you are wrong. Period. Please don't try to claim to be a victim in this, you dished out more than your fair share personal attacks in this whole thing.

Shel we still kill people for theirs sins. Only today we call them crimes and the death penalty would be the method rather than religion.

Tammy just gave a perfect example and explanation. If we want to get technical then we should remove the crusades and the holocaust from history too. But we don't. Why? BECAUSE THEY HAPPENED AND YOU CAN'T CHANGE THAT. you can only learn from it.

Banging my head against a wall here.

Fine, I give up. You all win. I lose. I'm tired of taking on this entire board when it's really the last thing I want to do. No one gets my message and I see that. Thanks for letting me know, all.

Yes, everybody here is completely stupid. You are the only enlightened one.

No. More like, we GET your message loud and clear. We don't AGREE with it.
