In honor of Whitney Houston, Gov. Christie ordering flags flown at half-staff in N.J. | NJ.com

Quote:
Gov. Chris Christie plans to sign an executive order requesting flags on public buildings in New Jersey to fly at half-staff on the day of Jersey native Whitney Houston's funeral.
Should flags be flown at half staff to honor entertainers or other non military, non government employees?

Does the fact that governors are not granted the right for discretion on flying at half staff for non-military or governmental employees matter? Should the flag code be changed to allow for this?

Does it cheapen the meaning behind flags being flown at half staff?

I love Whitney Houston. She has a special place in my childhood, I remember everything she has done. It was totally heartbreaking to hear that she died. I don't care what she was addicted to, people loved her for who she was before the train wreck started. It was just as sad to see her spiral out of control as it was to hear of her death.

That being said, no they shouldn't do it...it's just not appropriate for the situation. I am sure they could find a different way to honor her that wouldn't offend so many people.

No way shoud the flag be flown at 1/2 staff for her. It does cheapen the meaning of flags being flown at 1/2 staff.

*sigh* I can't really believe I'm reading this.

No, Whitney Houston doesn't need the flags at half mast. And yes, it definitely cheapens the meaning behind it if it does happen.

Does it cheapen the meaning behind flags being flown at half staff? yes big time

If they want to on their own, go for it, but don't mandate it for non military members.

I'm ok with it being for non-military or non-government employees IF they did something amazing in their life - like Mother Theresa (can't think of a U.S. example right now)

But no, I don't think they should do it for Whitney Houston. Yes, she had a great voice. But big deal. In the end, she was a washed up, has been, drug addict. (sorry it's very sad but true - she's no different than any other drug addict on the street except she had more money)

I rolled my eyes when I heard this on the news this morning.

They claim she was an important part of the fabric — the cultural fabric of the state. Heck I bet half the kids in NJ don't know who she is. We didn't fly the **** flags at half mast in WI when Chris Farley finally died...

I'm embarrassed that our governor would do this and feel it cheapens the meaning behind flying flags at half staff.

I also find humorous that for a man who is so vocal about his disdain for the behavior the Jersey Shore cast portrays on television would choose this for an entertainer who lived a similar (though not as extreme) public lifestyle

I was going to post something about this on FB yesterday, but I was afraid of offending someone. In my town, I saw a school near my doctor's office flying at half mast. My jaw hit the floor. Yes, Whitney Houston was a good singer and it's sad she died, but no way does this call for flags flying at half mast! How ridiculous!

It doesn't bother me. They can fly it halfway for Mr.Rogers or whoever else they deem it appropriate for.

It doesn't really bother me, but I do feel that this is not appropriate. The meaning behind the flag flying low is not for anyone and everyone, it is for those who served in the Military. Last I checked, Whitney did not.

No, unless you're going to fly it at half mast everytime anyone dies.

If her record label's company has a flag flying it could be appropriate for them to fly it at half mast, but not government buildings.

I'm not really on board with it only being flown at half mast for military members. There are other people that do awesome things for our county, their state, locality, etc. and I think each place should use their discretion. There are always going to be people offended, but oh well.

Flags aren't only flown at half staff for military members (and definitely are not flown at half staff here for all members who have died in combat). They are also flown at half staff for members of government, police, fire and emergency services who die in the line of duty. They have been ordered to be flown at half staff by the president for people who fall outside those definitions, for example the September 11th victims etc.

I guess I just don't see the need to add the pomp and circumstance to the death of an entertainer regardless of how talented they are.

As a resident of NJ, I think it's ridiculous. Chris Cristie had the flags lowered when Clarence Clemons died as well. I loved Whitney when I was growing up. I'm sad that her life turned out the way that it did and I'm sad that she's gone but I see no reason to lower the flags for her.
