Authorities say 9-year-old Savannah Hardin died after being forced to run for three hours as punishment for having lied to her grandmother about eating candy bars. Severely dehydrated, the girl had a seizure and died days later.
2 charged in death of Ala girl forced to run - Yahoo! News

Should the stepmother and grandmother be charged with murder or was this just poor judgement on their part? Do they deserve the charge?

This is way beyond poor judgement. Making a girl run around a house for 3 hours for a candy bar? That is not ok at all.... I don't know, maybe negligent homicide would be the best way to approach it. These two make me sick though.

Running for 3 hours for telling a lie about a candy bar is over the top, not poor judgment. I would never make my child run as a form of punishment. Running is meant for fun and exercise. Not punishment. It wouldn't bother me in the least bit if these two were found guilty.

Running for 3 hours is never an acceptable form of punishment for a child and is abusive IMO. Forcing a child to run for 3 hours without taking proper precautions to ensure she was at a minimum staying hydrated is beyond abusive.

I think they deserve the charge. That is beyond poor judgement for sure.

Something else related to the candy bar and running is rubbing me the wrong way too. Can't help but wonder if they thought she would "get fat" if she didn't run? Can't figure out another reason they would deem this an appropriate "punishment"

It's abusive and they deserved to be charged.

It's all over the news here. So heartbreaking.

I could see making your kid run laps for a few minutes, do a few pushups, stand with their hands up in a corner, or write their name 100 times on the chalk board, or something like that. Personally, I give a swat on the behind and am done with it. But to make a child RUN for THREE hours, with nothing to drink or any rest? That was just forcing a child to get sick, or in this case, the child died. WTH is wrong with people!! They should be punished---Hey, they thought the girl should be punished and THEIR bad choices killed her. They should get punished now and see how it feels to be abused. Unfortunately for the 9yo, she's dead and will not be able to see justice done. I only hope that the girls' remaining family gets to see this through for her.

Yup they killed her - plain & simple.

Driving a car while drunk is poor judgement too but if you hit & kill someone it's murder. I don't see this as any different.

Not poor judgement. What they did was abuse that resulted in this poor child's death. They deserve the charge.

Absolute abuse, and I can't imagine that this is the first form of extreme punishment they've used. They should be charged with Involuntary Manslaughter.

I agree, punishment doesn't fit the crime. Whats up with all this step mother abuse lately? The girl in Madison, then this girl. Dads need to stop marrying psychos.

I also saw where this woman was reported to have poisoned her son on Nancy Grace last night. She also had another child while in custody. Whatever punishment they get is too good for them.

What punishment doesn't fit the crime? They are going to be charged with the murder? I'm confused as to what you disagree with?

She's saying that the punishment the girl was given (being made to run) doesn't fit the crime of lying about a candy bar.

There are very few situations in this world in which I believe an eye for an eye is the proper punishment.
Things of this nature, happen to fall under that category.

That poor little girl.

That's the nicest way to put what I really want to say.

I liked Nancy Grace's suggestion that they should also be "run to death". That poor girl!
