Filmgoer takes stand on costly snacks, sues AMC Livonia theater | Detroit Free Press | freep.com
Quote:
Joshua Thompson loves the movies.
But he hates the prices theaters charge for concessions like pop and candy.
This week, the 20-something security technician from Livonia decided to do something about it: He filed a class action in Wayne County Circuit Court against his local AMC theater in hopes of forcing theaters statewide to dial down snack prices.
"He got tired of being taken advantage of," said Thompson's lawyer, Kerry Morgan of Wyandotte. "It's hard to justify prices that are three- and four-times higher than anywhere else."
While I agree that prices at the concession stand are high, I don't agree with filing a lawsuit. Its not like people are forced to buy snacks so I can't imagine that the suit will make it too far.

I think that's over the top. No one is forcing him to go to the movies and/or buy snacks. And you're not being taken advantage of. You know the prices, it's your choice to pay them or not.

I can think of a ton of things that have gone up in price over the years, and some of them are actually necessities. Don't see people boycotting, or suing over every single thing that goes up in price.

But then, personally, I think those complaining ought to be happy they have the spare cash to waste on movie tickets, and those expensive snacks, to begin with. With so very much of this country living at or below the poverty level. I'm not so certain they have much of a leg to stand on, while complaining about the high cost of their chosen entertainment. It is, after all, a choice they are making.

And people wonder why so many believe Americans to be a sue happy bunch of folks. Idiots like this, are exactly why.

People complain too much about stupid **** these days. Isn't there some better cause out there for all the ranting and raving? A better cause to put all that energy and focus towards? I'm sure I can find them some, if they're having difficulties finding them on their own.

Bahahahahahaha!!!! If it turns into a class action case, I'm signing up. Oh wait, I wouldn't qualify since I smuggle in my own treats.

This is crazy.

My grocery budget increased by $28 a week between New Years Eve and New Years Day....for the exact same products. To me... that's where there is a price problem, not the movie theatre.

It's one of their main sources of income, they don't make much off of movies themselves. It's silly to sue for. No one is forcing him to go pay those prices. If you don't want to sneak anything in, eat before you go.

There was a theater not too far from me where people basically boycotted the snacks for the most part. The prices had gotten sky high. When they realized they were losing money on snacks they jacked their ticket prices up by $2 a ticket. It's ridiculous.

We very, very rarely go to the movies because it's just too expensive anymore.

How ridiculous! While I share his frustration, a lawsuit is crazy! They'll probably up the prices due to the lawyer fees they incur having to deal with this dumb lawsuit.

I sneak my snacks in. Yes, I'm a bad parent, teaching my kids to be dishonest, and am probably going to hell. At least I get to enjoy my 5th avenue candy bar while I overpay for a movie.

The last movie I saw in theater is 50 first dates LOL. How do they not make much off of the movie itself? I think when a movie makes $70,720,485 in a weekend (Lorax), that's a pretty good chunk of money.

Still silly to sue over. I could see if he got kicked out for smuggling snacks and then turned it around on them or something, but just out of the blue he's tired of paying for snacks. Like the article said it wont go anywhere anyway, big businesses are protected. It's like trying to sue an airline for serving peanuts.

When you talk about each individual theater leasing the movie, it's really not that much. Read this: Economics Of The Movie Theater – Where The Money Goes And Why It Costs Us So Much - The Movie Blog

I never used to do this but my dh has been a bad influence on the kids and I and on the rare occasion we go to a movie, we sneak in some snacks too. We found out that if we really want the movie theater box candy, its sold at Walmart for $1.00 a box.

It's also a buck at Walgreens. We stock up there, lol! We buy drinks at the theater but candy/snacks at Walgreens.

The last movie I saw in the theater was 50/50 last October in Chicago. Before that, it was in 1998, Titanic, lol.

I didn't need, or want, snacks for either movie. We ate at Flat Top before 50/50 and we ate at a restaurant after Titanic. Better waste of my money than crappy snacks in a theater, bought there or snuck in from outside.

My kids go to the movies once or twice a year with my mom, she never buys them snacks(never bought us snacks growing up either). It's always either eat before, or after the movie, somewhere nearby. I know prices have gone up a heck of a lot. But they certainly weren't low even in '98, lol. Well around here anyway, don't know about elsewhere. It's always been cheaper to eat somewhere else.

LOL Tammy, you can't have snacks at hunger games! Unless it's bugs, twigs or water plant tubers

lol. I plan on enjoying all the snacks I want, since I'm going alone to the movie.

I would agree with you to pursue on the lawsuit. It is not right to sell over priced snacks on theaters. What a lot of people do not know is that theaters have to have high prices on concessions. That is where theaters obtain the most profits and otherwise, ticket prices would be over the top and no one would go to the movies. Good reason exists for movie theater concession prices. The chain’s profits were roughly a 60-40 split, but the costs of getting films to show was eight times that of concessions, so concessions are actually more profitable. High concession prices keep ticket prices low enough for people to buy them and overpriced popcorn is one of the reasons why theaters can operate at all.
