I wonder what affect this will have on her son. I am talking about the picture itself, not the fact that he is breastfeeding.

This was printed in our local newspaper this morning in the opinion section.

"Push back: Americans are tolerant; however, not tolerant enough for the enlightened ones. So they push on us the Kardashians, foul language on prime-time TV. Now comes the sexual exploitation of a young child on the cover of the May 21 TIME magazine. Time to push back.



I'm shaking my head at the sexual exploitation part, and the fact that they actually printed it. I really wish they hadn't gone for the shock and awe photo on the cover. It only fuels those with no common sense.

The thing that bothers me is the intentional shock-value. I feel like it undermines the goal of normalizing breastfeeding when you portray it in its "extreme", and then imply that a woman is not "mom enough" if she isn't willing to go to that extreme herself.

I have no hang-ups about nursing a toddler, but even I felt embarrassed looking at that cover. I nurse through toddlerhood because I don't see a need to wean when both parties are willing and beneficial participants, not because of some in-your-face personal agenda.

I kind of like it. The stance of the mom says to me "Yes, this is happening. If you don't like it, shove it". I like that. Yes, if it were a sweet photo of a young child being help lovingly by his nuturing mom (rocking a total earth mother look), it wouldn't be contriversial. The only people bothered by it would be people bothered by breastfeeding in general. We already know they're gonna get all peevey. This is a mom who isn't gonna take it anymore. She's not going to apologize. She's not going to hide to make you more comfortable. She's going to nurse her kid, and you're gonna learn to deal with it because there isn't a ding-dong-dang thing wrong with it. Frankly, we need that attitude a little more.

And this is from someone who only BFed for the first 6 months. And had never planned to EBF, I was thinking a year max. But still, there need to be no more apologises. They're just boobs. It's just breastfeeding. It's not a big deal.

I purchased the magazine in the airport this weekend. I wanted to read the article and see what it was about. Inside, it's ALL about Dr. Sears! All the pictures, most of the text. I was really confused why they selected that particular photo for an article on him?
