Mother outraged over judge's sentence for hair-cutting teen | ksl.com

So, an 11 y/o and 13 y/o "befriended" a 3 y/o at McDonald's and then cut off her ponytail. They were told to cut their hair as part of their punishment and now one of their moms is complaining about it.

What do you think?

i think its not enough. the OLDER girls cut a 3 year olds hair off and got away with just cutting their hair. they are old enough to know better. they should have gotten the community service. i am outraged that the mother is outraged by the options she was given. a hair cut, or community service. she CHOSE the hair cut. she can take her daughter to get a pixie style or something somewhere and im sure she would look perfectly cute.

I don't feel bad for the older girls at all. They deserved the punishment.

I do wonder though, where the heck was the 3 year old's parent when all of this occurred? I wouldn't let my kids play out of my view at a McDonald's. It's not like this all happened in the matter of a minute. The older girls first went to McDs employees asking for scissors, then they went across the street to a $1 store and came back and took turns cutting the girl's hair. Where in the world was the adult that was with her?

I think the mom complaining likely has other, more important, areas of her failed parenting to worry about. Something just tells me she's chock full of epic failboat moments.

I agree with the punishment as being appropriate, though I don't think it was enough, either.

I'd be pissed at my kids if they EVER cut anyone else's hair. Only my oldest ever cut her hair and it was right before her little sister's first birthday. Her punishment was it had to be fixed, lol. Which gave her a really short boy cut until it grew in. It wasn't really a "punishment" , more a consequence, lol. Though she did get a stern talking to about using scissors-a huge no-no for her at the time, and then using them on herself-when she could have easily hurt herself with them. It was her idiot father's fault for leaving them where she could easily get to them, too.

Woman who cut off daughter
The 13 year old sounds like a real sweetheart.

"An eye for an eye is not how we teach kids right from wrong"

That is where we differ apparently. In a case like this, I think it is absolutely how you teach a lesson.
Shoot, she didn't even have to do it, he just gave her an extra way to cut down on the hassle of community service. If I were that mother, I'd have cut her hair AND made her do the community service. Zero accountability parents create irresponsible and wreckless children who have no respect for the rights of others.

This is a much more in depth article than what was in my local paper. I love how intelligent the mother sounds too. "I should have went into the courtroom knowing my rights." Well actually you should have "gone" in there, but whatever. Maybe that's just a nit picky thing.

I think the punishment should have been to cut the hair and do the community service. Clearly these kids have a mean streak. You bet your buttons if someone cut my baby's hair and that's all they got, I'd be raising hell.

Seriously hair is just hair, it will grow back. There is something seriously wrong with these older kids if they thought it was ok to even come up with the idea that they were going to cut the 3 yo's hair. What kind of kid has that come to mind when they meet a small child. "Oh look a little kid, let's try to be her friend then cut off her hair". Glad it wasn't something worse! They need to be punished more than just eye for an eye type stuff. Not to mention serious therapy.

Sounds like the girl has some serious issues. If I were her mother, the fact that she had to cut off her ponytail would be the least of my worries.

I'm still wondering where the 3 year old's mother was during all of this.

The 3 y/o's mother was probably there in the McDonald's watching her little girl play with the bigger girls. Seriously, if they're in the play set it's not like you can see every little thing. You see and hear enough to know your kid isn't injured. It probably just looked like 3 girls playing together and if nobody was crying most parents wouldn't have suspected anything. I wouldn't suspect my kid was getting her hair cut if I saw her playing with other kids.
How was the 3 y/o's mother supposed to know the older kids had asked employees for scissors and then went across the street to buy some?

absolutely fair. The older child is also in need of some serious therapy if she was making phone calls threatening to rape someone!

I never tried to cut my own hair as a kid.. but my cousin did once manage to somehow lop off a lock with a pair of crayola scissors. Needless to say I freaked when she came away with the 24" long piece of hair. They could never really figure out where it came from until it started growing back, thankfully it was from the middle of my head and not somewhere visible. Her punishment though included the threat from her mother if she ever cut hair again with scissors they'd shave her head.

Her occupation now? Hairdresser. LOL

I think the punishment does fit the crime! I think it was fair. And the way I read it, the girl did get detention & community service as well as the haircut. The judge said he'd cut the hours of community service by 150 if she'd cut it off. The original amount was 276 so she still got 126 hours.

I would have preferred both the cut and community service. What I find odd about the whole thing is allowing a 3 year old to play with kids that big. My kids when that young did not play with kids that old that were not family or family friends. Teens and toddlers shouldn't be playing together in a place where there is no real supervision, IMO. There are places where that may be expected, like summer camps or something, but not at McDonalds.

They should have gotten the full community service sentence AND had their hair cut. If Lily did that I'd totally be all "Hey, chop it off. She did it to an innocent 3 year old, see how she feels now with an adult doing it to her!" I think it fits the crime perfectly.

I'm still wondering where the 3 year old's mother was during all of this.
More importantly would be where the mom of the 13 year old is. If my 13 year old daughter was already in serious trouble for an 8 month period of threatening another person with rape and mutilation, she would be on strict supervision....if she were allowed to leave the house at all for a while.

The article is not clear on where this happened but I am going to guess maybe in the play area. If that is the case, the 13 year old shouldn't be in there in the first place.

Very true. I was thinking that at 13 maybe the mom let her walk there with her friend if they lived nearby which I don't think is unreasonable. However, I know the play areas in places like that have age restrictions and 11 and 13 would definitely be too old to play in there. Like you said, the one girl was already in trouble for harassing and threatening someone over the phone. If she were my kid she wouldn't be unsupervised anywhere!
