There is a lack of research done on marijuana use in expectent mothers because it's considered unethical to have a control study done on women smoking pot while pregnant. Atleast in America anyways. So there isn't numerous research out there saying it's ok. In fact, the little research we do have suggest it's not. It may be better than certain medications during pregnancy of course, but it's not considered safe. It is an herb and only a select few herbs are safe in pregnancy, and only at certain doses.
Marijuana use in pregnancy does cross the placenta and it's known to cause small babies and may contribute to premature babies as well as intrauterine growth restrict (IUGR which also makes small babies). Many people don't think a small baby is a big deal, but it really is, especially in the long term. Small babies are associated with all sorts of risks as they get older (development delays, heart problems, asthma, and so on).
I don't like arguments of "well it's been used for thousands of years", yes and we never knew the effects of it until now, and even now we're stil learning. Women use to smoke cigarettes in pregnancy too, and now it's not recommended.
While I won't judge a mother for smoking in pregnancy I think it is best to avoid it if you can do so. If you need it for medical reasons it is best to use the smallest dose possible in your specific situation.
