As a mother who smoked during (for morning sickness and sleeplessness) and after my pregnancy (instead of a glass of wine as my nightcap, a joint does it for me) with my son, Michael, who is now 9 months old, I am extremely offended by the comments on this post. Yes I know it's from a Teen Mom fansite, judge me for my love of trash TV not for my smoking habits!

Now however you live your life, whether that is a clean or not, I try not to pass judgement unless your lifestyle is affecting others. But I was so offended by the ignorance that others were displaying by making comments like, "For me, the issue of smoking pot during pregnancy isn’t so much the conflicting/unknown health effects, but it’s the mother’s behavior, selfishness and lack of a conscience…period." or better yet this, "Natural methods? Um, I had my baby naturally, no epidural, no hospital. And I didn’t smoke during pregnancy. I did what responsible people did and ate some freaking ginger every day and never got morning sickness. Mothers who smoke during pregnancy and even smoke around kids after they are born are just awful people."

I can not believe that there is so much stigma against marijuana use that people would go so far as to say that mother's who indulge in this substance that is less harmful and much less addicting than drinking (which as well as know is legal) makes for an awful, immature, selfish mother who does not deserve to have children.

And don't get me wrong, there are definitely instances where the case is that mothers should have their children taken away, just like with anything, all good things come in moderation. I do believe that mothers who choose marijuana over their children, spend all of their money on marijuana and smoke in front of their children should reassess their thoughts on what responsible parenting is. Just like alcohol or any substance that impairs ones ability to properly function there should be a sense of responsibility to the user to judge when it is a proper time to indulge and when it isn't.

The article that got me through my doubts on smoking marijuana during pregnancy (and mind you, I wasn't lighting up joints everyday, the need for my medicinal use of marijuana was few and far in between, probably 5 times throughout my entire pregnancy, I do not believe in the recreational use of marijuana during pregnancy) was a study done by Dr. Melanie Dreher, who is the Dean of the University of Iowa's College of Nursing. She followed families in Jamaica with mothers who smoked during pregnancy and continued to follow the children throughout years of development and social interactions. You can read the article here. It's a wonderful study and I suggest people who support and who do not support to read it.

Whether you agree or not (your opinion will not change my stance on this, but it may change someone elses!), I would love to get some opinions on this matter: Do you believe that a mother who smokes during and/or after her pregnancy within reasonable means are selfish, irresponsible mothers who should not have children?

HOnestly and personally I have no issues with it. I do NOT see it as a drug because it grows naturally and is a natural piece of nature. Most tobacco products have chemical additives, but weed is (in MOST cases and only should be) in its dried cured natural state. I dont smoke, but much of my family does. In my eyes its your body do what you want with it. If you smoke so much you lay around all day and ignore all your kids needs then YES you are lazy and should have thought twice about having kids. But if you light up occasionally and prfferable for medical needs then no one should have a say. Its not like you are doing heroin, coke, meth, or drinking, its not a hard substance. its a natural plant. Im sorry people said cruel or nasty comments, and MOST people are completely uneducated on these matters and only know what they are "trained" to believe! It saddens me of how much of this world is full of ignorance or wronged guidance by the governments control.

I have no issues with it. Honestly there are so many ways you can take it where you don't even smoke it. Why be all "Okay, pop these various pain medications or mood stabilizers!" when you can smoke? Or if you have a headache, use salve? Or a vaporizer? Eat a **** brownie? Suck on some candy? You don't HAVE to smoke it.

It's just ignorance.

I use medical marijuana salve so I don't even get high but can function at work through the pain (no, I'm not pregnant though).

I am all for medicinal marijuana so not going to judge you there. I am assuming you let your dr. know you were smoking it while pregnant and they monitored you. Would you have smoked it if you had no morning sickness or sleeplessness? Just curious

Forgot to add in that my thoughts about smoking it after baby is born depends on if it is done around the child and if it affects the child being cared for. I bought a bottle of red wine and it stayed unopened for quite awhile because I knew one glass would knock me out (extremely tired). I don't like not being able to care for my son when he needs me, even though hubby can do it just fine.

Nope like I mentioned I don't believe in recreational use of marijuana during pregnancy. Afterwards as long as you aren't with your children (ie with a babysitter or in bed for the night) then recreational use is fine in my eyes.

I don't think that it's okay to take marijuana while pregnant. Even herbs can cross the placenta causing problems. If you have a medical condition, and dosage can be monitored and is Rx'ed by a doctor, than ok but in many states, marijuana is still illegal anyway, so I'm not sure how that would work.

I don't really care if anyone smokes it after, so long as they are not exposing their children to it,either by doing it in front of them, or coming home to them impaired. As long as it's used in moderation, I'm sure it's fine as a recreational thing. Just like eating McD's. Eat it here and there, but not every single meal because you know that eating it everyday like that will have health effects.

Just because it's natural doesn't make it safe. There are plenty of natural poisons. There are a lot of herbal supplements that say not to take while pregnant or breastfeeding. I'm not saying it should never be used or that people who do use it occasionally should have their kids taken away, just that it should be used with caution. Just like anything else that hasn't been researched to death I don't think it should be taken unless necessary. When possible, take something else that has been researched more thoroughly and has been proven to be safe. If there is more evidence of ginger being safe then that should be tried first for example.

As far as after birth, it should be treated like anything else that inebriates you. Recreationally it shouldn't be used around kids in any situation drinking wouldn't be appropriate. It probably shouldn't be smoked but ingested in other ways. Medically it should be used like pain medication, for example. Only when necessary and with another adult present.

This is true. However it if by far a lot healthier for your body than anything else out there, cigs, heroin, opiates, crask, etc. It grows in nature, and yes just because its natural doesnt neceissarily mean its safe. However I THINK most people are aware or at least knows smoking it also knows that it has ZERO negative medical side effects, unless you have an allergy and in reality there have been zero documented allergies related to it. In fact people who believe they are because it feels tingly in your throat and makes many people panic due to this, dont necissarily ralize just how hot the smoke CAN get and that tingle they feel is their bodies reaction to a hot air substance passing through their throat. So its technically in NO way a poison. Why do you think cancer patients can use it? It HELPS them. My mother smokes it daily for a back injury she sustained while hunting. No one has ever died from smoking it because you cant OD on it, and most people arent so severly desperate to get their hands on it they would kill someone else for it. What does weed do to people? yes it makes SOME people high, some it relieves pain (proven as a pain medication), some smoke it to help them stimulate the more creative sides of the brain (has been proven with several artists of differenc medias), some smoke it for other medical purposes (other ailments such as cancer, eating disorders etc), and the list goes on and on. Also, smoking weed DOES NOT make you eat peoples faces or your 40 pound dog, however smoking SPICE would, which, on througough enough tests WOULD look exactly like weed. SPICE is very dangerous chemicals cooked together with a leavy herb added to give it the "weed effect", it is also called an "edible inscence." However i know 2 people who have already died from it and one who was sent into the ICU for it. (they were old school mates with DH). It does NOT require any montering by another adult because what, do you think its really possible to OD on weed? no, its not. same way you cant OD on watching your favorite movie a million times without stopping (unless you never leave the room for food and bathroom etc)

ALSO history tip for everyone today:

The MAIN reason it was made illegal IN THE VERY FIRST PLACE was because major companies didnt want the hemp and other parts to be used for things like paper, building, smoking, medicines and more. WY? Because it would put hundreds of coorps out of business and of course we all know its the money banks of corps that own and control our government so of course the government made it illegal, so they continue to get the "financial support and donations" from the "people" who are really the coorps.

Now, as a TRUE example for WHY they outlawed it and what it can also be used for:

Hemp is the durable soft fiber from the stalk of Cannabis sativa plants. Hemp producers sell hemp seeds as a health food, as they are rich in sought-after essential fatty acids and have a good amino acid balance, together with various vitamins and minerals. Hemp "milk" is a milk substitute made from hemp seeds; it is both dairy- and gluten-free.Hemp is valuable in tens of thousands of commercial products, especially as fibre[81] ranging from paper, cordage, construction material and textiles in general, to clothing, in which hemp is stronger and longer-lasting than cotton. It also is a useful source of biofuels (from the oils found in the seeds) and medical products. Hemp has been used by many civilizations, from China to Europe (and later North America) during the last 12,000 years or so.

BECAUSE OF THE ABOVE STATEMENT THIS ALONE WOULD PUT HUNDREDS OF MAJOR COMPANIES OUT OF BUSINESS, PAPER PRODUCTS LIKE TOILET PAPER AND PAPER TOWELS, CLOTHING AND OTHER FAMRICS, CERTAIN MEDICINES AND FOODS. ONE MAJOR COMPANY DUPONT (I BELIEEVE IT IS SPELLED), THEY INVENTED NYLON AND THE ONLY THING THAT COULD COMPETE WITH THEM WAS HEMP ROPE, THE STRONGEST NATURAL FIBER, AND THEY WANTED TO PUSH NYLON ONTO THE INDUSTRY, AND SUCCEDDED. LEGALIZATION WOULD PUT THEM AT A HUGE RISK OF SHUTTING DOWN BECAUSE THEY DONT WANT IT MAS USED IN THE INDUSTRY.

In the United States, although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does acknowledge that "there has been considerable interest in its use for the treatment of a number of conditions, including glaucoma, AIDS wasting, neuropathic pain, treatment of spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis, and chemotherapy-induced nausea," the agency has not approved "medical marijuana". In a collection of writings on medical marijuana by 45 researchers, a literature review on the medicinal uses of Cannabis and cannabinoids concluded that established uses include easing of nausea and vomiting, anorexia, and weight loss; "well-confirmed effect" was found in the treatment of spasticity, painful conditions (i.e. neurogenic pain), movement disorders, asthma, and glaucoma. Reported but "less-confirmed" effects included treatment of allergies, inflammation, infection, epilepsy, depression, bipolar disorders, anxiety disorder, dependency and withdrawal. Basic level research was being carried out at the time on autoimmune disease, cancer, neuroprotection, fever, and disorders of blood pressure.

I wasn't trying to say it was a poison, just that saying "it's natural!" isn't a good excuse to use something. Take cinnamon for example, it's not a poison. It's good for you most of the time (helps regulate insulin), but you should not take it while pregnant. It can cause uterine contractions leading to pre-term labor or miscarriage. I haven't researched weed since I don't use it but it's possible it could have some affect like that on pregnancy. That's why I said you need to research it before it's used and if there isn't much research to back up it is safe then use something else that has been proven safe. Then only use weed if those other safe things have proven ineffective.

Very true,so many people are not aware about this. That's our government being greedy whats new.

So true. Many people are not aware of this. Farmers used to be required to grow a certain amount of hemp every year. Paper made with hemp last 400 years longer than paper made from trees. We are losing a part of our history as we speak, there are people who type archived books 24/7 and the history books are so old you can't even touch them with your fingers, they are just disintegating. If hemp was still used to make paper, this wouldn't be such an issue. Big corps, especially ones who are cutting down the rainforests would just lose too much money is pot was legal.

I'm not opposed to marjuana in and of itself but the fact that it is illegal makes it something I have no interest in. If it were legal and the child not present (because it's smoked and the child could inhale the 2nd hand smoke) and have no issue with it.

That has always been my thing.. the children. I don't care that people do pot, I do care when they hole up in a tiny apartment with a little kid and smoke it.

I am sitting here like this o.O while reading this.

If *I* smoked some weed, I better make sure there was another adult present because weed DOES have negative effects on *me*. I twitch, I get paranoid, I zone out, I've even been nauseated from it. There is no way I could care for my children if I was high, no freakin' way.

Just because you like the effect that smoking pot has on you, doesn't mean that there are no negative effects for anybody. Don't get me wrong, I think there are legitimate MEDICAL reasons why a person might need it, but beyond that, I do not believe it should be used recreationally.

I also don't agree with somebody smoking weed while pregnant. I would imagine that filling a pregnant woman's lungs with smoke would, in turn, cut off some of the oxygen going to her baby. Have there been studies done on if it crosses the placenta or not? Like a previous poster stated, just because it's natural doesn't automatically make it safe. YOU might want to believe that there are zero negative side effects but the truth is, you don't know.

I agree with the rest of your post, but to the bolded, really? You don't believe it should be used recreationally? Is that only because it's illegal? Do you believe alcohol should be used recreationally? My main argument has always been they should both be legal or both be illegal.

I'm not a huge fan of recreational drinking, either. I mean, I will have a drink every now and again, I'll get drunk MAYBE once a year or so. I guess it's more a preference for myself, really. I don't MIND if people indulge every now and again, I just can't wrap my head around the whole needing to be high to function thing. That's what I don't agree with, and most of the people I know that smoke weed, do it because they can't function without it. If you ask me, that's a pretty darn negative side effect.

Kind of a sidebar but if one can be an alcoholic, because they can't function properly without alcohol, then couldn't one also be a weedaholic? Maybe it doesn't destroy their liver but it could destroy their lungs.

I'm always torn over legalizing Pot. I really don't care if other adults want to do pot.

I'd much prefer if it was an ingestion legalization though. Narcotics of any kind (pain killers too) make my heart rate go up and honestly I'd be afraid I'd end up dying or something if people were smoking it around me (remember, not all smoke is second hand, smoke does come off the burning joint which is pure, not filtered by someone's lungs). I also really don't think that children should be getting high, while there may be no major side effects on adults, I'm thinking it cannot be healthy for a toddler to be around marijuana smoke.

As for during pregnancy... I'd need to see studies on the different ways to consume it and whether it had any major effects on the fetus compared to current pharmaceuticals.
