I'm watching American Justice, and it's talking about Daniel Colwell. He killed an elderly couple with the hopes of getting the death penalty because he wanted to commit suicide but couldn't do it. Should he get the death penalty since that was his intention? Is it really a punishment at that point or is it a reward?

ETA: He DID receive the death penalty.

Well, he will probably sit on death row for a long time. Hopefully, he hates small tiny spaces and not doing anything - that can be his real punishment until his sentence is carried out.

Well even if it is a reward it isn't like he will be around to enjoy it. I say give him the death penalty. That way the government doesn't have to take care of him for the rest of his life and we don't ever have to worry about him being released for any reason.

Oh and I find it absurd that a man is too chicken #### to take his own life but yet he has no problem with taking two innocent lives!

Well, who knows if he said he wanted the death penalty in hopes that they would NOT give it to him. Regardless, I'm against the death penalty, so I don't think he should be sentenced to death.

I would give it to him after a nice long wait in a tiny cold cell with only bubba to keep him company. I feel a life for a life.

I don't know about it being fair, I don't really care. Fry him up as far as I'm concerned (I would not be surprised to have some negative feedback on that comment).

I saw that episode. This man was completely and utterly insane. He was a paranoid schitzophrenic and should never have recieved a criminal charge in the first place, he should have been confined to an institution. He actually said many times that he was going to do this but still somehow wasn't given the help he needed. I don't believe in the death penalty to begin with but in this case especially I feel it was a complete miscarriage of justice.

No, I don't think so. He had threatned this numerous times and let everyone know his wishes well in advanced. No one took him seriously, and no one got him the help he needed. He fought with his counsel numerous times because he wanted the death penalty and they didn't want him to get that (obviously). He threatned the jury and told them they better give him the death penalty or he will repeat his actions on their family, ect....

I don't think he should get the death penalty but I now don't believe in the death penalty. I Think he should get tons of counsellings and medication that he's needed and obviously had to go to great lengths for anyone to take him seriously.
