I had to fill in briefly for Shane's teacher until the sub arrived. I saw on her desk the reading groups. Shane was in the "on grade level" reading group. Why did that make me feel disappointed?

I know it's only first grade. But my kids have always been "above" grade readers. Reading isn't his favorite ~ but it wasn't Andrew's either. Andrew didn't really LOVE to read until 2nd grade. I guess there's still hope.

When I was in first grade on my first report card they had my reading level as "Pre-Primer." My parents pitched a fit. I had been reading half my life by then (I was 3 when I learned to read). As it turned out *everyone* was listed as that level because they hadn't tested us yet and determined grade level. The next report card I was listed as "2nd grade" because the district policy was no more than one grade level above actual grade. I had actually maxed out the test (which went through 6th grade... one grade level above the highest grade in the school).

I was going to say the same thing. They probably all said "at" grade level on them.

Actually, no. There was a list of kids that were "above grade level" and one that was "at grade" and one for "below grade". I guess I should be glad that he wasn't on that one.

I think I expect him to be good at school. I think he will be. It's only first grade. He is doing well with everything, and I met with his teacher today and he is above in most areas. (I *don't* think he is gifted at this point) Its hard to tell with only first grade.
