Erin's new school has sent a reading list of three books. She read the first one in one day. Now she has to type a 2 page literary response to the book answering questions they sent her. She is almost done that. Then on to book 2 and 3 and it isn't even July yet.

She also got a website for math work over the summer. She has to log 100 hours of math work on this site. She is so excited.

Next they sent her info on what language she wants to take. She chose Spanish.

Can I tell you how excited she is for school??????

Just curious... What are her summer reading books?

OMG, I am so excited for her. I am so excited for your whole family having a satisfied and academically nurtured Erin! No more silly AR and boredom!

I am jealous I never had such an opportunity growing up, hope I can find something similar for my boys when they are older.

Wow, that's a lot of math! I'm glad she's enjoying it. I always liked summer reading.

She has three required readings with literary responses typed after she is done. The books are:

EGGS by Jerry Spinelli
Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry
Chains by Laura Halse Anderson

She has read EGGS in one day and started Gathering Blue. Anyone read any of these books?

I haven't read any of those books. Ani's likes books by Jerry Spinelli. Gathering Blue is on my list of books I want to read. I love Lois Lowry's writing. In fact, I named Ani Anastasia after Anastasia Krupnik, the main character in on of Lowry's series. I'm kind of surprised that they'd assign Gathering Blue and not The Giver since Gathering Blue is the second book in the trilogy, though I suppose you don't really have to read all of them since they are considered a loose trilogy with the same theme, but not the same people (a fourth book will be coming out in The Giver series later this year so it won't be a trilogy anymore). I wonder if the class read The Giver previously or something. I haven't heard of Chains, but I read Fever 1793 by the same author and thought it was really well written.

She really liked EGGS. She said it was sad. I imagine she will like the others.

Those are great authors. I didn't realize The Giver was first in a trilogy! It was one of my favorite books! (don't feel bad, if Hugo/Sergio had been a girl they would have been named after a character in it)

Going to have to get books 2 and 3...

I bet Erin is almost done!! What will she do with all her free time once the homework is done?!

I was wondering about the math website. What topics are they covering... algebra or above?
