Does anyone else have people constantly telling you that you're working the kids too hard when they see what they know? It annoys me SO bad because they're just smart! For instance, my 5 year old knows some multiplication because she hears her brother doing it and she wants to do it. I didn't make her do it but because she's only 5, people (especially my inlaws) tell me I'm pushing them too hard and to let them be kids.

We used to get that with Ani. She's starting 9th grade this fall. She would be in 7th in public school. Now no one pays attention. Fritz just turned 6 and is doing 4th grade math. They always note now that Cameron is behind (he's dyslexic). Yeah, it's called letting my kids go at their own pace whether that is ahead or behind.

It doesn't annoy me when the general public says that, because they don't know what they're talking about. It DOES annoy me when family members say that, because all of them sat through school bored out of their minds for 13 years and should know better than to let another generation stagnate.

Sorry your ILs are saying that. On the flip side, at least they realize how far they are working ahead of their age. My ILs have a one-upsmanship thing going where anything my kids are doing (which most everyone else notices is way ahead), they have a story about how such and such family member did that at the same or earlier age. For some of these family members I was there during that age and... they were definitely nowhere near doing whatever the said skill was. It takes someone else to point it out to them before they even act proud of something awesome the kids are doing... kind of sad!

I think when people see kids achieving beyond their age level they tend to get kind of defensive and it comes out in one way or another.
