I'm waiting on a phone call from my local public school - I called around today and was bumped from the county school district to our local school to their resource office. The lady there that I spoke with was extremely nice but not the one I need to ultimately talk with, so the correct lady should be calling me sometime this week. My daughter is homeschooled but under FL law we are allowed to have her tested and evaluated for any exceptional reasons and even to use their therapy in any way that we see fit, without attending the school. Ibis has some autistic tendencies and since starting her formal schooling in August, I feel that we are going to have some learning difficulties, especially with short-term memory and reading. We also have some behavioral issues that need addressing. Ibis has been to see some specialists (regular ped, neurologist, never a developmental ped or psychologist) and we have not received any diagnosis. What can I expect the school to offer us in terms of testing/evals? Do they deal only with learning problems or do they also cover behavioral problems? I'm hoping we can get something similar to an IEP so every year when her portfolio is evaluated we have an IEP to show that she is progressing, but maybe not like an average kindergartener. Can anyone tell me what I need to ask for in the correct terminology so I don't sound like a complete dope? Thanks!!

As for therapies, ask for Occupational and (if they have it) ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis). If the school turns you down, go to a dev. ped., get the dx and go back.

You can get evaluations for just about anything. Most notably, I would ask for an OT (occupational therapy) to check out her fine motor, PT (physical therapy) to assess motor, a special ed eval - to determine if any special ed is needed, a pyschological eval - they will do IQ testing along with other things which may or may not help with the LD, and a functional behavior assessment - functional behavior assessment will go through identify problem behaviors, triggers, and appropriate methods of dealing with it (this is where the ABA would come in, but without the functional behavior assessment, you may have trouble getting it without an autism diagnosis). Oh and there is also speech. I would that evaluated as well to make sure both receptive and expressive are on target. If you are thinking autistic tendencies, that would be a big one to have evaluated. These are the main things you can have evaluations done on. As for specific learning disabilities, I am not very familiar with specific evaluations for the different LD, but these will get you started.

I would also make an appt. with a developmental ped or a neuropyschologist to get Ibis evaulated and see if you can't get a diagnosis. If the school district gives you any difficulty with not having some sort of diagnosis, the diagnosis will make things much easier. HTH

Thanks both of you! It's so much easier to ask for something when you know what you're asking for!

Ibis has been seen by a neuro who saw subclinical seizures on an EEG, and she was prescribed Depakote. Our neuro suggested we have her evaluated so I'm hoping that'll be enough for the school system to do it. We don't have a single behavioral or developmental ped on our (supposedly fantastic) insurance which totally irritates me.

Oh, and Ibis also had Group B strep sepsis - and had symptoms of but was never tested for GBS meningitis - as an infant so we're wondering if that did any damage.

have you looked into a neuropyschologist? That tends to fall under mental health and they are also qualified to diagnose autism.

I saw this and I was wondering what happened when you talked to the lady? Did you get the help that you need?
