That they aren't like most other children? If they do, how does it affect them?

I think they do. I think sometimes it hurts.

Right now Alexis isn't aware that she is different, but I worry about how it will affect her once she does realize it. The children in her special ed class are great, but once she's more mainstreamed or even older, the kids can sometimes get mean and nasty to kids who are different. So I worry about how she'll deal with it.

Kids can be mean, but most of them are very accepting. With inclusion, more and more kids are being exposed to children with special needs. My students with LD are very well accepted, win awards, are voted on for school plays and other stuff, etc.

Thats very encouraging to hear. I am hoping that my worries are unfounded, but we'll just deal with it as it comes along.

I think all of us had to deal with unkind people, even if we did or did not have a disability. I try to teach my kids not to have a "button" that others can push and control you with.

That's a really good idea. How do your kids seem to be learning that and what ways do you teach that?
