How hard to you push your kids, in daily life, new skills, and so on?

Do you find that if you push too hard that they completely shut down and regress?

Right now the only thing I'm pushing with Hunter is to stick to a time schedule. He's been spending up to an hour in the bathroom when told to use the toilet, take a shower and brush his teeth.

I stopped pusing when it comes to his printing because it only frustrates him.

When he was smaller, we would work for short periods with breaks because he would tantrum and stop cooperating if we pushed.

Right now we have Alexis on a work time/break time system. She has a green star and a yellow star. When the green star is out, she has to work, and when the yellow star is there its break time. Shes up to about 10 minutes on task 2 minutes off task. She responds very well, especially when introducing new material. She used to tantrum like no tomorrow for that and now, she tantrum for oh 30 secs just to keep up appearances then comply.

As far as schoolwork goes, we don't push very hard and she doesn't have homework. At the present time, academics is taking a back seat to life skills and thats where we're pushing the most. I still have to watch where that line is because she is the same as mentioned above, she just shuts down and refuses to cooperate if pushed too far.

The biggest area of life skills that I'm working with her on is her personal hygeine. I won't bother to go into detail but she's 14 so when she's having af, its a HUGE challenge.

Oh hugs, I don't even want to think about when that will happen to us. But it will, and we'll deal with it when it comes.
